      Preseason Premier OYSA poll

Your poll of one voter (yours truly) concerning the dozen teams signed up for 05B OYSA premier. There's only 12, so there's a single Premier division, rather than Premier Green and White like last year. The list hasn't been officially published, but has been distributed to teams, and is not under embargo (i.e. OYSA didn't instruct coaches and managers not to share this).

The teams are, in alphabetical order

      4H Joga Jr.
      ADF
      Bend FC Red
      Cuervos
      ETFC Marseilles Black
      FC Portland Navy
      FC Salmon Creek
      Hillsboro SC Devils
      IFC GPS
      Rogue Valley Timbers Red
      Washington Timbers Red 2
      Westside Timbers Copa

And, their pre-season ranking. Caveats: This is based mainly on summer tournament play, with last year's state cup being used to break ties. Some clubs put teams in summer tournaments that will be vastly different than their OYSA entries. And the three B teams on the list (FC Navy, Red 2, and Copa) might be impacted by promotions and demotions--no attempt to guess about that is contained herein.

      Thus, the list:

      1) Cuervos.

I know they stank at State Cup. I've heard rumors that TA players were helping them out. They still dominated everyone they played against, winning three tournaments (Clash, Mt. Hood, and Chinook), clobbering all the local teams they faced, and taking out a few respectable travel teams as well. They are an excellent-passing team, not dependent on the skill of any one player, and they have the most enthusiastic sideline in Oregon youth soccer. Until someone beats 'em, they go here.

      2) Bend Red.

Won their own tournament going away, and had a respectable showing in Beaverton Cup, in a division featuring mostly travel teams and Westside's DA (losing by a goal to WT DA in the semis).

      3) 4H.

Hard team to place; sent a few squads of various abilities to a few summer tournaments. But has a strong history in OYSA play, and was a quarterfinalist in State, so I'm slotting them here just because. Big question mark is how much CFC's DA team affected them--other than that, this is easily the best team in the mid-Willamette Valley.

      4) ADF.

Got an unlucky draw in Clash, and fell to the silver semifinals, and was mocked mercilessly in this forum (even though they only lost one game, to a travel team, on a controversial call). Redeemed themselves and then some by routing the field at NWCL. Jo knows coaching, if nothing else.

      5) IFC GPS.

Not sure where to put these guys. There was an "IFC" team at Chinook, that got blasted by Cuervos, but don't know if this is the GPS squad. Were a good team in fall last year, flamed out in Spring and upset in State Coup, failing to advance out of group play.

      6) HSC Devils.

Am assuming that this is, more or less, the same team that competed as "HSC Boca" in some tournaments. Won PCU Summer Classic, finalist in Summer Slam. Big, fast, physical team.

      7) ETFC Marseilles Black

The second non-DA Timbers team shows up here. Was outclassed by Bend in the Bend tournament, dropped a game to HSC in Slam, but got even with them in the final. OTOH, did poorly in Mt. Hood Challenge.

      8) WT FC Red 2.

And the pole position in the race for Best B Team goes to the entry from Vancouver. Semifinalist in their own tournament (losing a shootout to a Montana team); didn't play much else that I can find. Well-coached, well-disciplined team

      9) Copa

The Team Formerly Known as Samba, after getting throttled in State Cup last spring, played in **FIVE** tournaments over the summer (Clash, PCU, Beaverton, Mt. Hood, and NWCL), advancing at least to semis in the first four but going winless (0-2-2) in Seattle. Got smacked around every time they faced Cuervos, lost a pair of close games to HSC, generally beat the other local teams they faced. Will try and tiki-taka you to death, won't always succeed.

      10) Salmon Creek.

Played in non-premier last year, so this will be a new challenge for them. Did poorly in PCU, did better in Summer Slam, so have shown improvement.

      11) Rogue Valley Timbers

Only local tournament appearance was Mt. Hood Cup. Knocked off ETFC, got smacked around by Copa and a pair of travel teams. Will have the best home-court advantage of anyone in OYSA Premier, but will have many long weekends in the van.

      12) Navy

Has any club been hurt by Timbers Academy more than FC Portland? Losing the best keeper in the state, as well as a couple of the best forwards and one of the best centerbacks (even if he was only a half-season rental from Westside) hurts, and that pain has rippled down the FC roster. Last year's White squad was a competent non-premier team (and a President's Cup semifinalist), but FC's non-DA squads were horrible in summer tournaments. Usual caveats do apply to summer tournament play, and FC's a good club with good coaches, but Navy starts the preseason at the bottom of the rankings.

Keep in mind, this is only a preseason ranking. Things may change once the games start to count, once players are no longer on summer vacation, and once newly-formed teams solidify. This is NOT a prediction of the final standings for fall league, let alone spring.

And with that, I shall now don my asbestos underwear....

LYS is probably one of the top non-premier teams.

OTOH---Bend crushed Eugene when they met earlier this year. And HSC beat Copa twice, who beat RVT once.

So appreciate your warning. It is not necessary. All is good. I have no idea why you think a parent complained or why you think a child would
Suffer as a result of adult issues. If Cony is anything, it's the fact he would
Never make a child pay the price for jackass parents. Nor would
Any respectable and worthy youth soccer coach. Sadly, you are highly misguided in your thoughts.

This poster is correct. This kid is better than last year's 05 keeper. My son has played with, and against both. He has scored a lot more on last year's keeper than the 05 who played/plays with the 04's.

Hmmm. I'm pretty familiar with both keepers that you are talking about. The kid who played for Samba and then for the 04 FC team looks to have improved. Nice! The other kid, made both ODP and the Timbers Academy, and, well he's just better. At least that's my opinion.

How in the world would your son be in a position to play 'with and against both' ?
Got to say I'm just a little suspicious on that comment!

Pretty sure both of the goalies in question were among the 4 or 5 goalies that "made odp" and played in Eugene- so I would guess that the poster has a son who is an 05 that also was one of the 40 or so that made that same odp pool or was also a samba player or either of the above and/or plays for a different club and played up?? Many ways that could have happened. I also agree, in my opinion a certain goalie got lazy and rested on his laurels (it showed at practice for etc and odp) and the other caught him. Funny how you seem to only see things one way in an attempt to defend only your view. Now who is suspicious??? Hmmmm

Okay- perhaps they could have played together on ODP, but still don't see how they would have played against each other. No matter, you do bring up a good point there.
The premise that the really good goalie got lazy and was caught in quality by the other boy- now I'm just suspicious that you are smoking a little weed. Not close, yet.

I guess we will find out real quick when the Washington teams pound the goal with shots. Good luck with that
