The LO doc should have used his influence on the NWCL board to make the OPL game on Saturday be the tie breaker. It's not fair that LO had man at the table when this was being discussed but Eugene didn't. When NWCL informed us about the decision they said that after "much debate" we have decided to let LO go through, so it obviously wasn't an easy call. Why not make Saturday's game the tie breaker? It would have been the best resolution.

I'd argue that the "bottom-dwellers" the Timbers played were softer than the "bottom-dwellers" that WPFC played. And the statistics back me up on that. In games of Flight B "bottom-dwellers" vs Flight A "bottom-dwellers" (i.e., THUSC, FCSC, and FC Portland vs. FC Nova, Tynecastle, or Issaquah), Flight B bottom-dwellers were 3-1-1 with a +6 goal differential.
They both had relatively easy runs at NWCL.
WPFC vs. EMFC / LO / Coquitlam
Timbers vs. Crossfire A / Crossfire B / NWN Red
I'd much rather have WPFC's schedule then the Timbers. WPFC did have an easier path no doubt.

It's exactly why you have "official rules, standings and regulations". They just f'd up big time and aren't willing to work to rectify the situation.
Yes there was a mistake (F'up in your language). It appears the "rectification" is the tournament director keeping his word.
The issue here is that He/they didn't communicate this to ALL teams. Having a "play-off" isn't the right answer either. The tournament director keeps his word / EMFC is pissed off (we all feel bad) / we move on.

Originally posted by Unregistered View PostCounter arguement from LO's standpoint. They played an extra game that they were told would not count. Why should they be required to defend their 2nd place position? They're GD is better than EMFC .... It cuts both ways. Either way someone is upset. Where do you stop the madness?
Again, what are they scared of? If you truely feel that you're the better team then what's the big deal about proving it.

I'm sure lo and nwcl hopes this blows over soon...it makes them both look bad.

I think it is fair to say that the top dwellers the Timbers played were a bit stronger than the ones WPFC played. At least on paper. But the Timbers were fortunate enough to catch NWN on what was clearly a subpar weekend for them, and a 1 goal win over Crossfire B (7th place in RCL and who WPFC destroyed 4-0 earlier this year) is not particularly brag-worthy. I'll give you that a win over Crossfire A is an accomplishment.
Had NWN been in their normal form when the Timbers played them, I would agree that the Timbers clearly had a more difficult path to the semis. But given the way NWN played last weekend (two losses by two goals, and only managed to beat the very worst team in the tournament by one goal), NWN were off their normal form and that makes it less clear-cut that the Timbers had the tougher schedule.

Stop quoting rules... don't you know that they can be changed at any time :)
Classic.
