sitting in the bleachers at the 08/07 tryouts in Stamford last night it was clear BS is in trouble. parents of current players all talking about the OTHER tryouts their kids are going to or which kids already have offers from other teams.

my kid is not amazing but he has definitely outgrown our town program. watching him play with existing BS players was sad. they split the kids into 4 random groups of 10-12 and each group had about 3-4 genuinely strong players (current BS and new kids). at one point they had the kids juggle. not that juggling on its own is any indication of talent, but by u11 if you are a half decent player, you should have no problem keeping the ball up for at least 5-10 touches. with a few exceptions, none of the current BS players were able to do more than 2-3 touches.

assuming all those top kids join/stay - it's about 16 players. add a few more who are being recruited with offers and you are looking at about 20. how the hell will they field 2 academy and 1 premier team out of 20 or so kids?

don't know if this is true or not but i was talking to a few BS parents who said that most of last year's u11s were offered academy spots and many (perhaps most) turned them down so BS had to take younger kids and scramble to fill spots. academy also lost some players recently so they pulled kids out of current 07 roster.

What do you mean 2 academy teams? Don’t they only have one at u12?

I've watched both u12 academy teams (pool of 24 players) and some very good talent on those teams.

Were you watching just the academy tryouts or the 2008 South tryouts too?

No two smaller teams, playing smaller fields. At U13 they move to one team on 11v11 field.

No -- USSDA U12 min roster is 22, max 26. Play 2 teams - Fall usually mixed, Spring Blue/White as at U13 roster down to 16/20 (i.e. 1 team).

It was one tryout. Both current North and South players were there as well as all the hopefuls. Out of this mix (and some recruits), they will create an academy pool (to field 2 teams) and a premier team. Likely 30-35 kids total.

Which begs the question... given what was on the field yesterday (and assuming even a handful of existing players exit and some of the hopefuls accept offers elsewhere), how do they pull together 30-35 kids who can play at the top level?

Current North/South teams keep getting hammered by clubs like Gotschee and Met Oval - which draw from smaller talent pools. Throw the MLS teams, NYSC, FCW and other CT clubs into the mix and how does BS stay competitive?

Mickey had lots of excuses for why he dropped out of the NYCFC league. The one that nobody talks about was that he couldn't handle his teams losing 8-0 to clubs like WorldClass and TSF.

BS made a big mistake doing North and South. There just isn't enough talent and the teams are watered down. Helps pay the bills though!

Actually 2008 North has been destroying the Gotschhees, Met Ovals, Oakwoods, FSA's and FCW's.

U12s crushing it. Awesome. Come back in three years and let us know how many of those kids are still crushing it at BS, or have moved up or down or out of soccer altogether.

Check again. They have been playing the B teams. Also Oakwood, FSA, and FCW are very different. They lose to town travel.

Why doesnt.MK put them in the real pre-academy league, like the one NYSC plays in?
