I have learned to look past how people dress and look. When you talk to someone over the phone at a business you have no idea whether they have piercings or tattoos or wear a polyester pant suit.

My dog is in day care 5 days a week and have been going to the same place for 10 years. The owner has a policy of tattoo and piercing cover up and it is absolutely ridiculous. The majority of the clientele are white liberals and nearly everybody maligns her policy but she won't change. And mind you this women is in her early 40's. Just last week she put up a huge Carly Fiorina sign and my reaction was " well, this explains everything..." Judgmental whackjob conservative. Personally I think it is a huge mistake to polarize your customers with any kind of political sign. I would pull my dog from the business but he is happy there. She pays crap wages and has a lot of turnover.

    Cujo, Cujo, Cujo.....

It's great that your wife teaches artists and if the artists are happy doing their art, nobody else cares, but it can be a tough way to make a living. But that is THEIR choice.

If you don't like the policies of your dog nanny why take Bowser there? BTW how much is that costing you? Maybe she can pay her employees better wage and then how much will it cost you?

There you go with the name calling again...."judgemental whackjob conservative". I guess only folks that "think" like you are immune to your name calling.

And, in many households the wife may in fact be the bread winner but her future earning potential is harmed by having kids because they cannot determine as a household who should stay home because of socio norms that are engrained.

I know a wife as breadwinner contradicts some previous posts but in economic downtimes it is very common.
It's all about the choices you make. It's that simple.

I'm surprised you didn't throw in a few Faux Fox into that post, Cujo.

A pair of pants a tucked in shirt a tie and a hat of some sort. This was in a time of segregation. Why didn't the black population have more of a disconnect in dress in those days than they do now?
Because those were the clothes that were accessible. When black men of some means did buy suits they would likely be tailored and would certainly have the "flair' of "zoot suits". These were fashion trends that were popular in the 40's and elements of the stylistic flair has carried on ever since.

Having children in general is a choice. As is caring for elderly parents or having pets etc.

All noble choices but require time, energy, effort outside of the workplace. They also will eventually interfere with productivity at some point. Fact. We all see it. The unmarried person with no kids whose life is work. Like it or not, those folks are usually pretty productive and never have to work from home because the kids have the sniffles. Travel, working late, crazy deadlines tend to be less of an issue for these folks. That is an advantage, HR rules and norms be damned.

And that is the point. Gender roles simply magnify the consequences.

OMG! What an example of liberalism has become from this guy and Cujo. They are the equivalent of your b*tchy spinster aunt, prejudiced, self-righteous and incessant whiners.

You two have become a study in the psychology of liberalism.

You also have no obligation to care for them. That is a choice. You are not required to do it. The fact that you feel obligated is normal and human. No one is forcing you to do it.

I'd like to think that I am aware of my prejudices and I am open to correcting them, and that starts with how I speak of these matters with my kids.

But being "prejudice" is simply prejudging, and that is NOT the same as RACISM. Racism would be acting upon ones prejudices regarding race.

Everyone is prejudice of something and that is simply an act of ignorance.
Actually, I think you are willing to "correct" others while continuing to ignore your own prejudices, despite what you might believe about alcoholism. That's where the self righteous comes in.

Let's not pretend that this is not true. Every choice has a trade off.
EXACTLY! And though people want to believe men and women are the same, we are not. It goes beyond the social norms that take the blame. It's part of our DNA.
