And yes, an Ametican who makes $34,000 is among the world's 1%. In fact the poor in the US are richer than the middle class in much of Europe.

If Sweden and Germany became US states, They would be among the poorest states.

Bad news, I know, for socialists who want to gain power.

Remember the Malcolm X quote? . Conservatives are wolves, but liberals are foxes. Update it to Republicans are wolves, Democrats are foxes. And remember who he said was the most dangerous.

Your an a hole if you think we should turn the clock back to that. Sorry but capitalism is responsible for its own failure. They get everything they deserve which is strict government regulation and their paying fair wages and providing benefits. I am tired of my tax dollars going to Walmart and other companies because they treat their employees like crap. You are longing for a world whose time has passed. I'm sure your wife still lights your pipe and fetches your slippers.

Trust and monopolies are just examples of advantages gained over other members of society. If they are obtained legally , there can be no quarrel . The recourse is attempt to change the laws if one perceives disadvantage.
Horrendous pollution . The air is cleaner than ever. We have massive amounts of infrastructure for water treatment, billions invested in " clean energy " , and all of this has evolved from simple beginnings of just disposing waste just where you can't see it. These modern times are the result of improvements , awareness and the prosperity to fund it. The notion that society should be blamed for past mistakes is ridiculous . People didn't realize dumpling garbage in the water would make you sick, until people got sick. WE know many things now that we did not know in the past. We knew more in 1950 than we did in 1880.
Near slavery. I am not sure what that means. No one is forced to work for a business. If you don't like your job, you have the economic freedom to seek another. The government applauds and heralds this process every month when they boast of the latest number of " jobs created " . Companies like Walmart exist because their customers find value there. if they don't, they go elsewhere. This is actually happening with competition from Dollar stores. The same rules apply as an employee. Walmart actually employs many members of society that may be unemployable elsewhere. Seniors, people with disabilities , etc. at least they are working and contributing to the economy.
Strict government regulation and high taxation does more harm to the employees than their employer. One of the biggest reasons for a business startup not moving forward is having to jump over all the hurdles.
Capitalism is one of the roots of the great American experiment. The motivation to achieve financial rewards with an idea, a process, or simple participation is the fuel that fires so many related institutions. Education, Research , Exploration, the list is almost endless.
Are you not tired of your tax dollars funding terrorism ? Kerry admitted the other day that part of the money released for Iran will no doubt end up in terrorists hands. Take you pick , Walmart or Terrorists.

When machines became available, and the focus on education became the norm, child labor eventually diminished. Human nature will always have a level of exploitation in every endeavor, but over the course of time it usually levels out in a civilized society.

I have a good job and am paid well, I don't think the CEO and his immediate underlings are worth tens of millions of $$ in salary and bonuses when the people that actually do the work get a 1.8 to 3% raise, which is actually a pay cut. It is wrong to outsource IT jobs to India, it is wrong to continually lay off employees and then hire them back as "consultants" for 1/2 the pay and no benefits, it is wrong to bring in H1B visa workers and have Americans train them and then get laid off and lose the severance if they don't train them. I think you get my point. As much as I am opposed to government intervention, and quite possibly government enabled many of the issues I am complaining about through legislation, if it takes regulation to fix it I am for that.
What you are implying is a lack of fairness, Fair is an elusive concept. We live in a Global economy, more Global than any time in our history. Perhaps we need to adjust, or reinvent ourselves. The person in India who is getting that American job , isn't much different than the American job created by an American product or process that competes with foreign competition.
Keep in mind that here are billions and billions of dollars invested in America by foreign companies, some of them may even be industry leaders. For example , the Chinese now own Volvo, and they are making cars in America.
