To be fair, following a sports team doesn't require any effort besides watching it. If your kid plays club soccer, the amount of travel, games and expenses are going to make it a central part of many parent's lives; and as such make it something that they are likely interested and invested in. In my experience this is especially pronounced at the higher levels when you see the same kids/parents 4-5 times a week and travel throughout the country with them. Does this make it acceptable for parents to live vicariously through their children, and be obsessed with club soccer - obviously not. However, I think merely following and talking about club soccer isn't some terrible thing either: and makes the sports fan analogy pretty reasonable.

To be fair, you can do all that without bashing other clubs, trying to mythically rank yours and other little kids' performances, and running to an anonymous message board the first opportunity you get to brag/trash/rank them and their friends. It's weird, no matter the context.

Being invested in a club for something that is in constant flux, won't last more than a few years, absolutely does not matter in short nor the long term, and everyone associated with it will forget it all, its even weirder.

My granddad was a Sox fan, and I have great memories of watching him grumble as another September slips away. I watched with my dad, and cheered after so many missed chances we finally won. I missed him dearly and was on my mind as soon as we won again. My kid now does the same with me.

          vs.

Bragging that your 10-year old kid's team is better than another.

Not sure how they are even in the same conversation, truthfully. My love for the game goes back literally decades and am thrilled I was able to be involved watching my kid realize that same love and follow it until she got through college. Because, I love the game and I love her. That has nothing to do with how kids who haven't hit puberty yet competed on a drizzly Saturday afternoon. Because, that result didn't mean anything to her, nor us. She played for the love of the game, not to give mommy Facebook content.

What does your sappy story about grandad have to do with sports. You could have been doing anything (basket weaving) with grandpa for that to matter.

Once you morons start ranking little kids art projects it will fit in nicely.

Need more "My kid's drawing is better than your kid's drawing" to really make an impact.

Putting it on the fridge just won't cut it any longer.

Can't we just get back to how Aztec and NEFC are the best teams in MA.

Is Aztec still losing a game by 9 goals?

I think so but my kid plays for Blue and we don’t care about losing and winning. Unless we win. Then we care a lot.
