To be fair, following a sports team doesn't require any effort besides watching it. If your kid plays club soccer, the amount of travel, games and expenses are going to make it a central part of many parent's lives; and as such make it something that they are likely interested and invested in. In my experience this is especially pronounced at the higher levels when you see the same kids/parents 4-5 times a week and travel throughout the country with them. Does this make it acceptable for parents to live vicariously through their children, and be obsessed with club soccer - obviously not. However, I think merely following and talking about club soccer isn't some terrible thing either: and makes the sports fan analogy pretty reasonable.
Being invested in a club for something that is in constant flux, won't last more than a few years, absolutely does not matter in short nor the long term, and everyone associated with it will forget it all, its even weirder.

vs.
Bragging that your 10-year old kid's team is better than another.
Not sure how they are even in the same conversation, truthfully. My love for the game goes back literally decades and am thrilled I was able to be involved watching my kid realize that same love and follow it until she got through college. Because, I love the game and I love her. That has nothing to do with how kids who haven't hit puberty yet competed on a drizzly Saturday afternoon. Because, that result didn't mean anything to her, nor us. She played for the love of the game, not to give mommy Facebook content.
