Very true, defenders who can score are very valuable and essential in the modern game. Great defenders are fast, great foot skills and have the field vision to setup a play. Good midfielders from the younger age groups often make great defenders, win games and get noticed by D1 coaches.

Actually it is really stupid and completely backwards. Most uBitty 'stars' plays mid or striker at a younger age, the best also some have defensive talent and can thrive in any almost any position if they are athletic--these are the players that succeed at higher levels. Ten field players by u13 can't all play mid, some are moved to the back or on the wings. If a player is slow, not that bright, are not encouraged to play hard defense and have constantly been told by their idiotic parents that they really should worry less about defense but instead should to "help" the offense then the fail in the long run.
