When soccer snobs say that kids in the US don't spend enough time with the ball at their feet, I'm afraid they don't mean for kids to sign up for yet another organized pay-to-play league, with practices structured by adults, with some teams focused on winning big tournaments, and played with a low-bounce ball.

It's more of a metaphor for having the type of passion for soccer that it's a constant part of a kid's daily life. They're hoping for more of those kids who bring their soccer ball to school to play at recess (maybe even dribbling there and back home again), who eat dinner passing the ball between their feet under the kitchen table, who get home from practice and head outside to improve upon a skill they just learned, making up a new skill combination in the process, who attempt to juggle in the back seat of the car on the way to the grocery store, or at home with anything somewhat roundish they get their hands on. These are the types of kids who may make their way to the top, but more importantly, they are playing because they truly love the game.

Real skill and tenactiy. Without the superstar middle of the pack team, probably not even out of the group stage.

I've been around youth soccer for about two decades and one thing that is consistent are the similarities elite player share. The blond Revs/Explosion player and a couple of the Revs/ Black Knights players, all have the same physical characteristics. Apart from the immense inborn talent in the game, they are all tall, athletic, lean, muscular and extremely co-ordinated. There are almost clones of one another in those respects. They set themselves apart from the regular kid who doesn't run properly, arms always flailing and lack balance. The elite players either are working with trainers or it may just be a genetic thing but that's what struck me the most out there in Hanover. They look the part of pro soccer players already at such young ages.
