    Hello Bolts.

Question about the 25% start rule and how it applies to waivered players or open period roster additions - Does the rule apply to the number of games in the entire season, or only to the number of games the player has been available for? If the former, depending on the number of waivered/newly joining players, that's a lot of starts for the spring season that the dedicated year long players will not be getting. Seems like it would be to your advantage to join in the spring, especially if you are a starter for a decent high school team, as you'll be guaranteed a number of starts in spring DA, as well.

Players have to get the stars in regardless of when they started. So yes waivered players have to make up for missed games and players who busted their butts all fall will be pushed aside. Needless to say it doesn't go over well.

Thanks, my kid is in U13 DA, so has a couple of years before having to make this DA vs high school decision. I can imagine this would be particularly bad for those players of recruiting age who played fall DA, as college coache, who have more time to travel for recruiting during the spring DA season, will see these players sitting on the bench, and instead get a good look at their waivered counterparts. Seems incredibly unfair, but sounds like if you want to play the recruiting game to your advantage, waivers are the way to go if you can swing it (plus you get to put all those high school accolades while playing easier competition on your soccer resume, right?).

No, it’s based on percentage of games played.

It's based on the percentage of games they were available to play in. However, if a player only plays in half of all games, then he has to get his 25% in for those games he played in. That means someone else isn't starting. Fall players are more likely to have made their start requirements as they had 10+ more games to play in. Someone loses.

              10. Minimum Start Requirement: All U-13 through U-18/19full-time Academy players, including goalkeepers, are required to start in at least 25% of their club’sAcademy games during the season. TheAcademy Staffwill review the percentage of player starts for each team throughout the AcademySeason. The official record of player starts will be the game and player statistics availablepubliclyonline. If a player is releasedby the club, the club must submit a written explanationif that player failed to start 25% of the Academy games for the season. The Academy Staff reservesthe right to refusetoreleasethe playerif the releaseis to avoid the 25% rule.If a playeris addedmidseason, the playermuststartat least 25% of the team’s remaining Academy games during the season.

Depending on the club those waivers won't be easy to come by. Not only does the club have to approve it but so does US Soccer. There has to be a proven need so for public HS players they can only hope a club adds them after the fall; it will not be guaranteed like a true waiver is.

Depending on the level of soccer a player is aspiring to playing DA is not always necessary. This series of threads done each year is a very important tool. Note how many kids did NOT do DA. As your son gets closer I recommend you both take a look at these lists. Yes you have to play high level club + high school, but you don't have to do DA if you're not aiming for a top college program. http://talking-soccer.com/TS4/showth...150790&page=64

If you are good enough to sign for an MLS club at 15 you would be crazy to sign for an MLS club at 15.

That is a very good point.

True but not everyone can get to Europe before 16 or even 18 because of work and visa rules. And for some MLS is the goal. How many HG's have the Revs had Not being snarky I just don't know who many. Article said this is NYCFC's 2nd but they're a very young club.

Better shot progressing with NYCFC than the Revs. Europe would be preferred but isn't always attainable.

The level of HS soccer is so low no MLS DA kid devoted to developing their talent desires to play HS soccer.

No MLS DA will give waivers. No MLS DA will contract, release then recontract a player to allow him to play HS.

Your kid can play middle school soccer and see the low level at that stage. If that is engaging enough, they should not go to DA but enjoy HS soccer. Certainly ISL and private school trumps MLS DA , but he must choose if fortunate enough to qualify for both.

These people have no clue what's coming. Reyna, NYCFC : leading the way. Reyna's son already signed in Europe. NYCFC/Reyna is setting the bar for US advancement. LEt's hope they have an effect. Maybe rub off on neighboring FOxborough.

No one plays just HS soccer. There's always some kind of "high level" premier club as well. Like someone posted, depending on skills and goals that may suffice. It isn't just HS soccer but other sports as well. If you're skilled enough to get a ice package to a quality private or prep school, take it. In the end education matters more, opens more doors. Smart players have many college opportunities.
