Any current players not get offers in the hopes of keeping spots open to land external players?

Don’t accept an offer with a roster of more than 18 on an ECNL team. Otherwise you may be a practice player. Make sure club is clear on this. ECNL/ECRL can only dress 18 per game

There are some specifics about ECNL that suggest a need to look at roster size differently. ECNL teams play a lot of games over the season. So that has a few consequences to keep in mind:
1. There is more playing time than in some leagues.
2. Over April and May, they play 2 games every weekend. That can be a lot, especially when ...
3. Many ECNL games are more physical, and players on some teams often cross that line into dirty play. There are injuries. So a bigger roster helps. (And yes, having better coaching and better referees would make more sense than throwing players into the meat grinder.)
But it certainly is a good idea to know whether a player is in the top 16 or so, or in the bottom several players.
