usually that word is reserved for a new disease that results in mass numbers of death over a wide geographic area (HIV,Spanish Flu etc..) we are throwing that word around as mass deaths aren't occurring YET!!!!
the reasons for that ? click bait, shock value, political gamesmanship, abundance of caution, who knows
I agree we should take precautions ,but creating panic at this stage is counterproductive
the common flu isn't considered a pandemic because its seasonal ( but by definition it is)
large area and lots of deaths attributed to it. it has just become a part of winter now

Frankly, I look forward to this younger generation and its renewed idealism. We need it badly. I don't think it's a question of universal healthcare anymore. It's going to quickly become how to bring it about. I think college education will eventually be free or nearly so. I think we will eventually find a reasonable and workable immigration policy that isn't about walls, or religions.
I think we will find this all a lot faster if we could find a way to put in term limits and implement federal funding of elections and eliminate PACs and lobbyists. That is what will break the back on what we see now.
there is no editorial standards in the news room (there used to be, and they were high)
so what we get now that passes as news are tweets, conspiracy theories. stories that start with the phrase" if true" and whole narratives based on unnamed sources. this wouldn't have happened 40 years ago
you are right its the boomers that created this,or at least one segment of the boomers
the peace movement, no nukes crowd after the Vietnam war.
the boomers are the first generation of Americans that haven't known real calamity and have lived thru the most prosperous period in American history
our children certainly not all but the vast majority) are the most pampered ,least wise generation America has ever produced-thats our fault as well
how on Earth have we gotten to the point that nanny state socialism is even an option
he who would trade freedom for security deserves neither

You couldn’t be more wrong. Flu HAS been pandemic on occasion ....2009 Spanish influenza for example. But we knew from your “gibberish” that you were just faking it. Word of advice. Refrain from getting out on limb with things you have such a sketchy understanding of

seasonal flu fits the definition of pandemic- large area and many deaths
we don't call it a pandemic because it happens every year- try looking up the definition
we know seasonal flu is coming, we have vaccines for it and yet we lose 40K every year to it across the US- we adjust the vaccine for the particular strain of flu that's evident that year and sometimes we get it right but in the end the only thing that stops it is warm weather
we don't stop it we try our best to minimize it to various degrees of success year to year
instead of being a dumb ass and just lashing out- slow down and read, and if you don't understand try reading it again

The Spanish flu pandemic was 1918-19. It went in waves across the globe and the lethality got worse as it mutated. That flu hit young healthy adults the hardest as their immune systems went haywire in an over response mechanism. Pregnant women died in horrific rates. Right now C19 is like the flu in that older and vulnerable patients are hit the hardest. So far. Viruses can change. That is what keeps epidemiologists up at night

Look in the dictionary. Pandemic refers to global spread, not the severity of illness or death rates. So yes flu could be called a pandemic every year, but all flus are variations of flu strains. Pandemics are worrisome when it's a novel illness where there's no immunities or vaccines that can be quickly developed. The bird flu in the late 2000s saw a vaccine developed and distributed pretty quickly because they were able to build off existing knowledge and production technology. Unless we get really lucky it will be as long as 18 months before a vaccine can be widely available

Please note the the bolded part above. The con has clearly climbed further out on his limb and baldly asserted that annual (“every year” ) flu could be called pandemic.
I’ve already identified myself as a scientist and know this not to be true but let’s turn to the experts at the CDC ....
Seasonal Flu vs. Pandemic Flu
How often does it happen?
Seasonal Flu: Happens annually and usually peaks between December and February
Pandemic Flu: Rarely happens (three times in 20th century)

Con I enjoyed owning you. Thanks . Let all readers note how you “handle” these idiots

this is all just natures way of killing the weak...Lets not be so narcissistic and think we (as mere humans) can control nature. Just pray that your friends and family is not susceptible to this. In a year or two, we will all forget about the corona virus.
Leave it to the media to blow this up and SELL the story....in a few years there will be a "new and improved virus" that the media will shove up our _sses!!!

WHO Criteria for Pandemic classification https://www.sciencealert.com/scienti...red-a-pandemic
The WHO defines a pandemic as "the worldwide spread of a new disease."
A pandemic disease spreads across "several countries or continents, usually affecting a large number of people," according to the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
A viral outbreak could be characterised as a pandemic if it is "markedly different from recently circulating strains" and if "humans have little or no immunity" to it, according to the UK's Health and Safety Executive.
A disease becomes a pandemic when it can infect many people over a large area, be transferred from person to person, and cause clinical illness, the HSE said.
