Fact of the matter is that soccer will never be a mainstream sport here in the USA. The pro game will always be second or third rate and a place for young kids that aren't smart enough to go to college, or washed up veterans looking for a few more pay checks. The best athletes in the country choose football, basketball, baseball, and even hockey over soccer. All of those sports pay their players 10x what the average MLS player is paid and that's not about to change either so they will keep getting the best athletes.

Nope. You're digging for an excuse. There are youth teams in the US that go over to Spain at 12 and 13 and beat everyone except Barca and Real youth. The system starts to let those players down at 15-18.

Anyone who talks about "best athletes" knows eff all about this game.

You just proved my point- TA has been a laughing stock of the academy system because of how poorly run and the fact that they lack talent (predominantly your westside snowflakes as you point out). Stop living in the past, what is relevant is now- and NOW westside has become an also ran and is being passed up by other clubs especially the younger ages which bye the way is the clubs lifeblood moving forward. TA has been around long enough now that people are realizing it's not all it's made out to be and in fact is a very poorly run organization that has little to no morals or ethics and will completely contradict their mission and purpose for the almighty dollar because they care that little. You sir are obviously nervous and realize the cards are falling or you would not spout the drivel about the past

The TA does not pick the top players in the area! Everyone knows this. TA teams are built with players that private train with the coaches. They might grab 50% of the players in the area and the other 50% struggle because the environment is toxic.
We can only hope that one day the TA can be run professionally like Vancouver Whitecaps or FC Dallas

What point? You have not attached your name to any theory or given any examples which club is the post-Timbers DA leader for boys.

The only facts to go on are OYSA championships, region iv placement, college placement, DA placement and professional players. Westside has that cache documented and continues to move forward.

You’re welcome to share a unique opinion but without any evidence to support or defend your position what’s the point? Every club is marginalized with the Timbers DA in our community, Westside obviously has taken the biggest hit from a personnel standpoint, which would be a fatal blow to nearly all other clubs, yet they are still remain leaders in the OYSA platform. Primarily due to the low level of talent and coaching at other clubs. It’s so sad even in this weakened state that Westside still outperforms the other mediocre clubs. It’s actually pure comedy.

Only 50 perc of players on u15 roster are from Portland and surrounding areas. By u16 that drops to about 35 per cent.. all the rest get brought in from states like California and Florida. And so it goes.

WT 05 DA 2, ODP 05 1.

Well-played scrimmage today between a DA team and the recently-formed 05 ODP team for 2018. Match went scoreless in the first half; both teams had chances but the defenses held. ODP opened the scoring in the second half with a blast to the upper corner from outside the area, and Westside responded a few minutes later with a similar shot, chipping the keeper from 30 yards out. Both teams had excellent chances after that--an ODP shot from inside the box went over the bar, and Westside had a point-blank shot cleared off the line by an ODP defender with the keeper beaten. Finally, WT's striker launched one from the top of the box, which was saved by the keeper, but another Westside player buried the rebound in the back of the net.

Interesting contrast of styles between the two teams. Cony is infamous for avoiding the center square, instead instructing his teams to play up the sides. ODP, on the other hand, preferred to try and run it up the gut, and was frequently effective in doing so.

All in all, an enjoyable match. And a reminder than there are many, many good players in Oregon who aren't part of the DA program.

For all of you oysa chest pounders it's time to stop- your all star team just got beat by one of the bottom feeders in "little DA". Much like TA, recent events (holiday tourney at tualatin indoor) show the problem with the respective rosters

Some of this isn't bad, but MLS and NCAA cutting a deal is a pipedream. What MLS owners or fans is very low on their priority list (antitrust and compensation issues for D1 football and basketball are much bigger issues for them to work through). So NCAA will continue to be an important destination that operations largely outside of pro and youth soccer, but will continue to influence the other 2.

Second, we should never, ever design a system with a single pathway in a market. The best teams globally and locally didn't have that - MLS academy competing in a fair competition against NASL, USL, independent youth academies is likely going to win out in the end in an open system; bureaucrats deciding winners and losers is recipe for mediocrity.

We need to build a system that helps all clubs be better.

Still all a dream - in the meantime, some kiss the Timbers ring (Westside), some don't (FC), but we all pay the Timbers' tax (OYSA). God bless America.

If I could make one reform of the NCAA, it's that amateur status would no longer be like virginity--lose it and it's gone forever. Instead, I would define "amateur status" as "not currently playing for money". But if players try to go pro and crash out, and then want to pursue an education, I've no problem with them playing collegiately.

It would probably make college soccer (which is currently third-rate) much better. Right now, it's mainly players who are clearly not good enough for the pros (with the occasional Jordan Morris or Darlington Nagbe having a successful pro career after finishing college).
