That said, this is an important concern. I don't have an issue with subsidized training offered to younger kids, but I do have an issue if the funnel is closed at age 11. Even if one discards questions of fairness (sports is unfair, after all)--it would be stupid, as lots of miniature Messis will find themselves too slow and unathletic to function at a high level when they become teenagers. Even guys like Messi and Cruyff, neither of them a physical stud, were sufficiently good enough athletes that they simply can't be overpowered by bigger, faster, and stronger players. But lots of pint-sized Pirlos will find that their l33t dribbling skills don't matter if they can simply be shoved off the ball by defenders.

They made a great hire a couple of years ago on the boys side. I think the results from this is prompting them to cut some of the long term dead wood.
