I am a UPDX parent, and I can guarantee this is not true. We had several kids do ODP with several OPFC kids. I am sure this nothing more than someone trying to stir up controversy. We are good. We do not need to recruit.

First, OPFC has several players (GR and AB to name two) better than anyone on the UPDX 05 roster.

Second, someone from UPDX saying "we do not need to recruit" is like Cheech and Chong saying they don't need to smoke dope, or Donald Trump saying he doesn't need to be corrupt because he's already filthy rich.

Now, it might well be the case that UPDX knows they aren't going to steal the top players from arguably the top club in the state--at least not when they don't have ODP regional spots to offer--and isn't making any serious run at anyone at OPFC. And OPFC is a tight-knit group that focuses on a particular community; I have no idea what UPDX thinks it can offer--ADF is a better option if you want a hyper-intense training environment rather than your standard neighborhood club.

But the club, in its nearly two-year existence, prizes recruitment above all else. Even if its roster is full--if they can get kids "in the pool", that means they're not playing for another club, even if they never see the pitch for UPDX. It's like USC's football team used to do before scholarship limits; they had a scout team that could beat other Pac10 team's first teams. Of course, UPDX isn't that good, but the suggestion that they have enough players is the funniest thing I've read here in a while.

Updx is trying to bring in better players so they can move some down and have a decent B team instead of 30+ kids in a “pool” fighting for play time on the A team. Yes they are trying to poach. 30 kids is enough to field two teams already. That's 15 per team, one short of the recommended team size (16) for youth 11v11 teams, and 3 short of the maximum you can roster in a game (18).

Of course, some parents (and some kids) would rather be in the A team "pool", even if they sit on the bench against anyone who is any good, then be demoted to a B team. Other kids just want playing time, and don't care on what team. Others might even being the alpha dog on the B team and being able to dominate other B-team kids.

AZ (with CFC last year) made the pool; he was the only UPDX name I recognized.

A few slytherins were at tryouts and didn't get on, though I think one eventually got taken to Phoenix.

On a brighter note the oysa thunderdome season really kicks off this weekend with some much anticipated matchups. A Westside/opfc rematch, adf vs 2 of last years da teams (fc pdx and opfc), updx vs cuervos and cap fc. Should here some good chit talking and a multitude of excuses right out of the gate. Let it begin, ding ding. Any way we can get some lines and predictions again. It always made it more interesting

I think the "A" team had four regular WT 05s, plus JJ from TA who has played with WT during NWNL (not sure if he is playing with us for winter league or not), plus RP who plays up for the 04 team.

B team had 3 WT players.

Shame is the number of quality players who didn't go, or even try out for ODP. No AP, no AK, nobody from ADF, no JGP, etc.
