Your recaps of today's Westside action.
First, the Crows.
Cuervos FC is known, among other things, for the most enthusiastic cheering section in the local youth soccer scene. Coordinated cheers. Maracas and other noisemakers. And usually they are a cheerful crowd, especially when the Crows are winning.
Today, they had quite a bit to cheer for in the first half, as Westside came out in an usual defensive formation (summer tournaments are for experimenting, after all, especially as a new team is broken in); one which didn't work well and quickly gave up a goal. Order was soon restored, but Cuervos were the stronger team throughout the first half of the match, and crossed the equator with a 1-0 lead.
Minutes into the second half, Cuervos would double their lead on a turnover--and then the scarecrow suddenly found its brains, and Westside proceeded to murder the Crows in the second half, turning a two-goal deficit into a two-goal victory within a span of 25 minutes. Two goals were scored almost immediately after Cuervos' second, and the team in red dominate possession for the rest of the half. The winning goal came soon after, and an insurance goal was scored from the penalty spot as the Crows fell apart. And the Cuervos sideline became a bit less cheerful.
The second match today was against Salmon Creek.
FCSC, last season, played in Premier White and did well at that level, but didn't get far in State Cup. While some of the comments in this forum painted them as a rec-level team; they're better that that. (But the trollish suggestion that they would win this tournament is equally ridiculous). Essentially, a good analogy for Salmon Creek is to imagine FC Portland without Antuan Peterson--they've got an elite level goalkeeper who is big, quick, and can (and does) punt the ball into the other team's penalty area. And they've plenty of hustle and muscle to spare. What they don't have is anybody up top who is a competent finisher, or particularly fast--top-level defenses can shut them down fairly easily, and in three games FCSC managed a grand total of zero goals. Of course, Westside didn't score in this one either--for much the same reason they didn't score the past time they played FC. Given that Westside needed only a tie to secure a spot in the semis, and generally had the better of possession--I'm not that bothered by this one.
So now, the semis. None of the top four teams have yet lost in this tournament--collectively they have four wins and five draws, three of those draws coming against Monarcos. Contrary to a lot of the woofing around here, the top OYSA teams are at least dangerous--especially ADF, who did manage to come out as the top seed into the semis. OTOH, any of the four teams left can conceivably hoist the laser-engraved log slice tomorrow.
