I'm an alum....girls can't stand playing for him. He is the reason why players won't come. The program is close to hitting bottom and unfortunately he has them all fooled.

Nothing he does resembles the foundation with which the program was originally built, NOTHING!

The guy has had a winning record almost every year except three in 12 years. Most of the losses this year were close except one. Sounds like he needs to recruit better.

Hey, we get it. You are an FC Portland supporter. They have a nice program, but if a college wants to compete on the national level you can't build that with Oregon raised players. Doesn't matter what club or league, including ECNL, that they play in.

The bigger problem facing U of P is what else can the school offer to high level regional and national recruits now that the program has tailed off. Even Oregon & Oregon State have equal or better facilities and offer a much more diverse college experience socially & academically. It took truly elite level players (few of them were from Oregon) to get the Pilots to the top originally. It will be substantially harder for them to reclaim that success than it was the first time. Just go visit the campus, it is pretty underwhelming.

You are right. There are no FCPDX girls of any quality.

They do have one quality local player and she came from Vantucky....but that doesn't count as Vantucky is in Washington where they actually develop players...we don't develop players here in Oregon. We do have ECNL but there might only be 2-3 total girls at each age group that are true ECNL players and in fact those 2-3 wouldn't even start on most of the top ECNL teams.

They do have one quality local player and she came from Vantucky....but that doesn't count as Vantucky is in Washington where they actually develop players...we don't develop players here in Oregon. We do have ECNL but there might only be 2-3 total girls at each age group that are true ECNL players and in fact those 2-3 wouldn't even start on most of the top ECNL teams.

Portland is a decent school with a rich soccer culture. The only way portland can compete for recruits is by offering athletic and academic money. Are they willing to do that? Does the administration think people want to attend high priced Portland for acadmeics? If not I expect them to be in the middle of the WCC standings no matter who the coach is.

IMO portland needs to carry a roster of about 26 with half being ODP (minimum team players) players from CA to be competitive. If u look at Stanford's 2018 commits, everynone is from CA.

Do we know that UofP wants to compete on the national level? Maybe they don't need to. Maybe they just want to be a top regional program? They had 2 losses all year by more than 1 goal and those were both to huge schools that are well known nationally. They're not in as bad shape as all the Timber's lemmings would have you believe.

Regardless how many "quality" players FCP has, it's still more than all of the Timbers Alliance clubs combined. Are the TA clubs even fielding HS girls teams this year?

It's easier for portland to retain their own. Get the top fc portland kids to stay and then veture outward. Portland doesn't have the acedemic reputation to get a freshman or sophomore to commit early. Places like UCLA and NC recruits huge classes to ensure they have 15 really good olayers. Portland realizes they can't do that. SMith rcruits for FC PDX because he knows what he's getting. He's seen them everyday and knows their character. Portland will never be the power they used to be.
