No man - that was cool to watch (trying to work while watching, not always easy). This world cup has been epic.

Tactics evolve and can't stay king of the hill forever.

Possession soccer is a thing of the past! Anyone learning possession soccer will fall way behind developmentally! Look at Spain! They out-possess Chile 63% to 37% but get their tails handed to them! They out-possess Holland 64% to 36% and lose 5-1! Oh no! I can't believe I have been sold this possession garbage from you people! What have I done to my child? Oh me oh my.

It's amazing. The clubs, the parents, the Oregon coaches. They were years ahead of the world and none of the possession people new it. I am humbled by their genius and tanacity. They saw that possession soccer was completely dead when Spain didn't see it. They were right there on the cutting edge like Chile. We all need to learn from this World Cup that it's really important to kick it really hard.

I can't wait to see which Country can kick it the hardest and is going to win this World Cup. Hopefully, Klinsman doesn't ruin years of hard work to get the U.S. team where it is and teach any possession or just how to play the game in general cause I'll be pissed.

I agree with you and think this is funny. The tactic isn't the problem, it was clearly the execution. When they played the tactic correctly, they were tooling whoever they played. The issue was that they only were able to do this for about 5% of the game.

We always knew. Just look at how the USWNT plays. They couldn't possess the ball to save their lives.

On the women's side, in particular, kick and run with size, speed, and athleticism is most critical. i.e. USWNT.

Interesting topic . . . at the top level, counter-attacking teams have had a good spring. Atletico and Real making it to the finals of Champions League, Chelsea making a decent run as well.

Of course Pep and Mourinho interpret recent results: Pep argues that it is a question of execution, the Special One that teams' strategy evolved effectively to beat Spain. Heard alot about Chile, but really couldn't watch much of that game (was trying to get work done).

EDIT - As for how to develop players - don't we want all of our kids to be competent with the ball at their feet? Who knows what type of system they will play in when the get older, but from a development perspective don't we want them to have a solid technical foundation and isn't learning possession-ball a good means to to that end? . . . think folks interpret counter-attack to be bootball; Real's counter-attack this year was amazing at times and I wouldn't call it bootball.

Sure wish the US had maitained a little more possession yesterday. Specifically in the last minute or so.

Possessing the ball on a quick direct counter attack is just as important as possossion in the context of indirect play. To be an effective counter-attack team you have to posses the ball up until the last touch that directs the ball into the opponents net. The issue is that in Oregon, many many coaches confuse "direct soccer" or "counter attacking soccer" as the opposite of possession soccer. The opposite of direct soccer is indirect soccer. The opposite of possession is boot ball, which is indiscriminately kicking the ball up the field in the general direction of a forward mostly resulting in 50/50 or more likely 70/30 battles between your forward and the opponents defense. No team in the World Cup plays latter.

You clearly don't watch the USWNT much. Or if you do, you simply don't understand what you are watching. Yes, they occasionally play direct, but they mainly play a pressuring, uptempo style with excellent BUILDUP to scoring opportunities.

Are they as technically skilled as a Japan? No. But they use their strengths (size, speed, strength) effectively, and their style is definitely NOT bootball. I would equate the USWNT's style to the women's version of a Real Madrid, whereas the Japanese style is more of a women's version of a Barcelona. Both styles can be very effective, if applied effectively.

Japan out possesses Colombia 60-40% and gets creamed 4-1. Time to boot. But boot with a purpose. Go to goal!!
