    Thorns Academy $7,000 + a yearr

I think the Thorns Academy supporters need a reality check on what the future holds.

If the Academy is going to provide league play and the teams qualify for the USYS Regionals and they go to at least two out of state showcases the PLAYER cost are going to be $7,000+.

I won't stoop to the level of the ECNL haters and roll in parent travel cost or try to exaggerate the Player costs but based up on the experience of the U16 WT/TS girls last year $7K is a reasonable number for the cost of participating on the Thorns Academy teams that would provide a comparable experience to ECNL.

The Timbers/Thorns are NOT going to be underwriting the $100,000 per team costs to participate in the FWRL and the USYS Regionals and the independent showcases. If they were they were going to provide this level of support they would have announce the program and disclosed the cost profile long ago and kept the ECNL clubs from attracting the best players.

How do you know what the WT U16 team spent last year? Are you with that team?

Not only has that number been posted here by a WT/TS U16 parent I know one who confirmed that is what they are going to have spent after their trip to the Regionals is over.

I call BS. The cost for the players was not that. Sorry, get your facts straight. And no parent posted that. It was other people claiming that was the cost.

And speaking of facts, we get to go to the ECNL meeting tonight and hear about how CU came up with their estimated costs. I would be nice to see a break down of the estimate rather than about four line items.

OYSA fees are going to offset these costs so you really only have to worry about the costs that you are paying. OYSA fees along with expanding upon the existing Thorns and Timbers sponsorships should have that cost down to $1,500. Sounds like a great deal.

That would be nice to see. Just don't think it'll happen that way...

You will hear that presentation and how it was arrived at with consultation with WA Crossfire. As a parent who spent a season writing those checks I'm comfortable that they are within $500 for the player costs.

As for the WT/ST costs that is what TWO different parents have said they will have spent on club fees, last summer's tournaments, FWRL AND the costs of the up coming USYS regionals. If you are a team parent and say the number is less get their Visa bills out and do an HONEST audit and tell us YOUR #.

Oh yes the balance of the OYSA clubs are going to okey dokey with sending $75,000 to the two teams with a THORNS jersey.....surrrrrrrre they are. They might pull that off for one year but I doubt that member clubs are going to support the exclusive nature of the Academy with Rec fees.

You need to shake yourself and do the math. It costs what $800 to do ODP including regional camp. How are you going to pay for three times as much training AND the travel to FWRL games plus the USYS Regionals for an additional $700?

Unless you are privy to the Timbers plan to throw $100,000 at each team you are looking at a minimum of $6,000 per player and that is if they don't do any big summer tourney's or showcases which will take the number over $7,000.

The Timbers take ALL of the OYSA ODP fees for administration of the program so I'm not sure where you think the rest of the money is going to MAGICALLY appear from.

They are currently in talks with OPL to try and extort this from them in order to re-join OPL.

Just because you claim $7,000 is correct, doesn't make it so. Hey, I've spoken with ECNL parents and it was closer to $12,000. I guess that makes it a fact.

So $7,000, or more than the cost of ECNL, and they get to play in a league that is far inferior to ECNL? Sounds like a great deal!
