One example I've seen kids play at least 50% of the game (and often more) in all their summer tournaments (roughly 15-20 games) all their fall league games (roughly 12-16 games) spring league games (roughly 8-12 games) thats a total of around 35-48 games of 50+% playing time, but if they play less than 50% in an average of 3-4 games at the end of the year they all of a sudden act like its the end of the world and they were done wrong.
I watched an OPL State Cup semi-final game yesterday. FC Portland had 7 subs on the bench. Two actually made it into the game. But the other 5 knew going in that they might not play. Not a big deal.

Not a big deal? Guess your kid never sat a whole game on the bench. Good for you/your kid. Knowing going in that there is little chance you will play is one thing and sitting out a game is quite another. We all realize this is competitive soccer and the first and foremost goal in State Cup is to win. And before State Cup everyone is informed of how things might go down. However it is still heartbreaking when your kid is on the bench yet has the grace to hold his/her head up and support the team wishing all along for just a few minutes on he field because they love playing the game more than anything. And please don't come back with some snide remark about how that kid needs to work harder/do extra training etc. The kids that I know who sat out do all that. I guess it's a life lesson. One you need a tutorial in. I hope for your sake your kid never has to experience it.

Well said. It's far worse if it's an away game in Seattle and your kid is sitting.

People go to FCSC because they don't want to play Pacific as there is all dad coaches for the most part. FCSC does have a few good coaches left above DAD rank and there are a few teams that are very good, beat Pacific teams. But if you really want to try to have your child play premier then Timbers is place to start. I not saying it's the club to stay at but, at least for most part they do produce a competative team at each level of play and its much easier to transitoin to a higher level Portland team when you played Timbers. Many Portland coaches won't look at kids who come from Pacific at older ages. They know for most part it's a select level club. Also, many times when the beat a Timber team it's not the top team. Basically have 3 choices in Vancouver Pacific for select play for most part, FCSC for select play for most part unless you get a pocket team and VT which is starting to break into premier level status if you get Red team.

            Being sanctioned by the OPL?

Is that like having Bernie Madolff lecture you about sound investing?

In my experience it bothers the parents a lot more than it does the kids. The kids have a pretty good idea where they sit on the depth chart. Parents are a little more biased in their opinions...

Touche. Why bring guest players if its a second Tier tournament? Oh I get it so you can win.

Do not have on SC if you are doing the same thing. That's it.

Not "guests". Pretty sure they are rostered players from within the same club.

You really don't know what you are talking about. Not in this case. Soccer means everything to my kid. We aren't the parents that push our child, insist on extra work, harass the coach or scream on the sidelines. We are supportive of her commitment and as a result also are supportive of her team. We also realize that she is not one of most talented kids on the team. But she is one of the most committed. Decisions about the level of commitment and intensity have come from our child, not us. So, sitting on the bench for a game was really rough on her. And rough on us watching her suffer afterwards, though she managed to celebrate her teammates win and not dissolve into tears until she got home. And just to let you know what kind of a kid she is, she then composed herself, decided she was going keep working her ass off and went to extra training that evening. Her decision, not mine. My "bias" as you put it is not that I think that my kid should play more or that I have special designs about her potential. My "bias" is towards her happiness, you moron.

Its unfortunate because people all say kids sit during state cup but it would be interesting to see if any kids sat an entire game during a state cup run?

Tina sat the kids during league games and indoor games just to win them so it wouldn't be surprising that during a time where it was a bit more understanding she would sit them. It is interesting that examples of FC Portland ex on here dealt with top premier teams and i can tell you that ALL the players play during state cup runs. PERIOD.

Don't believe the FCSC parent or coach who is lying to you. No one is as bad as Tina.

Nemesis is playing 2nd level state cup....not sure why, as all we do is talk crap about everyone else or how good they are, come to find out we can't even play in the top state cup.

A coach sitting her own original players for a 2nd level state cup considering some of them are guest players...is a joke.

What a circus. If she could find anymore kids to get her a win in any situation she'd sit the entire team.

same could be said about the 98 Timbers then.

Did they play premier opl? Did they bring in guest players outside of their club to win games? Are there any kids not playing? Is their coach as misguided as a parent and needed other coaches to help her while tryouts were going on?

Not the same as the 98 timbers but I wouldn't bring them into it as that team is a pretty low standard for a vt A team. But at fcsc, its a rolls Royce.

I guess we can assume opl premier teams wouldn't make it in 1st wa state cup.

Actually they would struggle considering fcsc needed guest players from pacific.

Relax. If that is the level for them then great. Valencia destroyed them and they played opl 1.

                              What does that say.

It's generally understood that if your team has a large league roster; then for certain all important games, some non-starting players will sit out and may get little or no playing time. BUT you're still winning or losing as a team.

However, if your team has a roster limited in size and for non-important games you bring in outside guest players and bench some of your own team, it sends a clear message to the bench they're not needed or considered part of the team when it's about winning at all costs. Sets a great example as a coaching role model.
