OYSA making a mess of ODP

There is a massive conflict of interest within the ODP 2009 and 2010 age groups this time around. 2009 have an OPFC coach at the helm of the ODP 2009 team and basically their entire pool made the travel team. 2010 have coaches from the Saints FC and United PDX leading the 2010 team, every kid from those clubs that showed up, were placed on the travel squad. All while leaving kids who were picked for the Regional camp teams months ago, off the roster. It seems pretty black and white.

I don't have have a dog in the fight. Just rationally looking at the rosters after speaking to several friends deeply involved in the groups.

I find it entertaining as heck. People take this stuff so seriously like your kids entire future depends on youth soccer. The reality of the situation is what makes it super entertaining. For example "My kid didn't the ODP Travel Team!" The only kids really deserving are the top 2 or 3 players. After that is just picking kids based on a coaches criteria and yes some politics for sure. The top 2 to 3 kids, the best kids, don't need politics or money they are in. At 09 and 10's those 2 to 3 kids likely will not be the best kids at U16, 17 and 18 when it counts, and those top 2 or 3 kids are gong to be lucky to be D2 or even top NAIA players. Most D1 boys are coming from the Academy's these days maybe ECNL, but the ECNL boys are roster spots. Let me back up a little. There is a difference between D1 and roster spot D1. Lost of schools have D1 roster sports for tuition and grades.

For those OYSA'ers and most boys ECNL its some D2, NAIA and juice box D3. D3 is all about participation and tuition dollars. There really isn't a reason to go to any school in the Northwest Conference unless you play sports and have the money to burn to keep the dream alive.

99.9% of the parents on this board think this is life or death. 99.9% of the clubs coaches and administers on this board need to keep the dream alive for parents to keep the dollars coming in to continue their six figure life style. Bottom line is this whole OYSA experience could and should be run by volunteers and parent coaches and we would get the same results.

most people just want their kids to get a chance without politics and BS. And the reality is that soccer is a very subjective sport that lends itself to coaches being gods who make all decisions based on their own personal biases. Most sports rely on stats that allow them to stack rank player’s productivity and performance, whereas soccer can be more about what the coaches think will work and who they “think” is better.

as far as college soccer, who cares? The reality is maybe 2-4 kids out of Oregon soccer a year will make it to any real programs and see any real playing time. It’s not their fault, they are victims of a pretty bad soccer system that prevents true long term development. So by the time college soccer is an option most are either burned out or haven’t gained the required knowledge or technical ability to actually perform.

My guess is the person bent out of shape plays for a smaller club. Players at the smaller clubs don’t get looked at or scouted like players from larger clubs do. It can be an access issue for some but if someone wants to complain then play for a larger club to get more exposure if that is what you think…

We all know the who is associated to the most egregious use of their position as ODP coach in recruiting players.

Last year you just needed to be a F98 player.

New year, different faces, same issues.

I was sad when Berhalter didn’t choose Pepi, but Pepi is gonna grind it out. He’ll be back for more! If GGG doesn’t pick Pepi again, well…maybe the next coach will! I still love my team even if I don’t agree with all the decisions. Those decisions aren’t mine to make (sadly).

Anyone heard about ID2? Saw that this is like ODP but for one age group each year. Apparently it is free unlike ODP. Anyone know about ID2 or heard of anyone locally being part of it? I wonder if there is less drama than ODP because this program is free to players?
