Other than the Timbers Locker rooms-offices and THPRD's maint. and some of its planning dept the building sits empty.. Of the 80-90,000 square feet the Timbers take up about approx. 5,000 sq ft THPRD uses maybe 10-15k sq ft. so 60-70,000 square feet is empty

Its a boondoggle of Biblical proportions.

Nice deal for the Timbers though!

I wonder who got paid what?
Bill Kanable's and Denny Doyle's Westside Metros got to change their name to Westside Timbers...

Not from Aloha and not going to read a zillion pages of crap, but just throwing out this little general tidbit:

I moved here in the late 90s when my kids were toddlers and have always paid THPRD taxes. So I'm "in district." As soon as I could, I started signing my kids up for classes of all sorts and it was fantastic. That includes, the use of THPRD parks and trails and yes, FIELDS.

Okay, back then, they may have not been in as good of shape so they weren't as anal about the grass fields, and yeah, they didn't even have turf except field #1 at the Athletic center but it was all good.

What started bugging me was, as the years have gone on, and yes we still pay taxes for and are in district THPRD members, we can't go to a field (that is not being used and is wide open) and just play around, kick a ball around (any ball). We get kicked off, told we need a permit. I have a ID card but nope that's not the same I have to "pay" a fee. What fee? I pay frigging taxes, thanks. And nobody is using the field. And how are two or three people on a nice sunny day going to ruin this big grassy field, I ask you? Did I drive a tractor onto it? Run out there with logging spiked boots? Um, no.

The question as to groups using fields, especially organized groups and teams. I believe every single one of them should have to pay the same fee. There should be set group rates, etc., And that's their problem on how to pay. And it should be scheduled through the THPRD office. If you say that WSM and THUSC have old contracts with THPRD that go way back, there are a couple things to remember: one, any contract can be broken plain and simple (any contract lawyer can tell you that); and two, the contract should be limited to the original fields that they were contracted to use at the time of the original contract (so if that means only those fields at the Athletic center, then that's where it should be confined).

As for individual use by THPRD residents who pay taxes to fund and maintain THPRD facilities, parks, trails, and fields: they should be able to use them without a permit if they are clearly not a large organized group there to play an official game, i.e.., a mom or dad playing with their kids on the grass. Sheesh, THPRD needs to set some realistic priorities...

There are a lot of places that don't let you play, even if you pay taxes. The local high school gym for example. I want to go play there, but it's locked and they won't give me a key, even though no one is playing in there.

Now, most schools have fields. Beaverton HS is not too far away and I am sure you can go out there and play kick around. Our local fields are full of people during the weekends. (on a side note, I am going to petition the community to set up a rule that only locals can have priority time there, you know, since we pay taxes there).

I suggest you go to the THPRD website and you can read the meeting minutes on how they allocate time. It's in the minutes. You can probably go to a meeting and also ask why you can't use a field any time you want to use it. Do they allow you to use the aquatic center freely?

One we pay limited benefits (unemployment insurance) the other we pay for years and years.

They both accomplish the same thing

Along with your line of thinking, nobody should be able to use ANY of the THPRD facilities unless they pay a large group permit, yes? Or just a fee in general?

Let's just go with that fee idea okay? Yup, you have to pay a fee for open swim, lap swim and general use. The general use fee, if you pay monthly, will also be good for gym and weight room use in any facility, as well as the indoor track. So if the general use of fields by THPRD members are lumped in with this general usage fee, for example, where exactly would they "punch in" then? You do know how that system works, right?
And going along with this line of thought, whey aren't we charged a toll for walking on the trails, then? How dare we? I mean, we're just the stupid tax payers who paid for it, what are we thinking walking on the trail without punching in with our general use card before walking on the trails?

BTW, public schools are state run. You know that too, right? So, different governing body. And there was actually a time when people could actually use school facilities for general public use but times aren't so innocent now are they? An open field is quite a bit different from a enclosed educational building. A wide open piece of land with grass on it is a bit different from a room full of equipment that can cause injury. Guess whose liability is higher? I know you were trying very hard for a tidy comparison but it doesn't come close.

Do you pay THPRD taxes? You seem awfully defensive, in a proprietary way. My kids either played for a club that had access to the THPRD fields or for a club that had no need of them, so with regard to the soccer team use debate, it's neither here nor there for me. That being said, and realizing that we are on a soccer forum, you do realize that there is more to life than soccer, right? And that you do not own the THPRD fields. There are a lot of people who want to use the fields, even a small corner now and again for a short period of time, and don't give a rats ass about soccer, or lacrosse or other organized club sports.
We're coming back to the subject of THPRD tax payers flipping the bill and in doing so, wanting to have access to the facilities they pay for. I would not be surprised if, in this day and age of class action suits, that a contact lawyer is hired by angry THPRD taxpayer residents to break that old grandfathered contract.

The contracts are only for the HMT turf fields and one of them ends in December

And I agree with you I don't think anyone would be surprised by lawsuits at this point

Its regrettable that THPRD has been run in such a poor manner. They have a lot to offer they just don't seem to have the management horsepower to do it with.

Hiring expensive lawyers sounds like a good use of Aloha's money.

Much better use of their money would be to pay off a politician like Double Dip Denny

Oh hold on ---- WST already made that move!

                        Dang it

And you know this how? Fox News told you? Way to insult tens of millions of citizens in this country with your ignorant and cliched ideological horse****. Guess what...people who work in government are normal, tax paying citizens like anyone else, not some "class" of people worthy of your brain dead disdain. I guess teachers, cops, firefighters and yes even dreaded "bueracrats" are no-good lazy parasites "on the dole"? You know what...I'll let you in a little secret...some public sector employees are not very good at their job, some are incredible and the rest (and vast majority) are somewhere in between...just like in the private sector.

You see people are people so why should it be that you and I get along so awfully? Oh, that's right...I forgot that you (and your ilk) don't believe in critical thinking based and reality-based observations of the world around you to draw your (what should always be humble and somewhat tentative i.e. none of us really knows dick) conclusions. You have your "betters" to tell you what's right, well that and your "gut".

Yes this free lunch and government is bad mentality is why we have a hard time moving the ball forward in this day and age. This mentality says that I pay too much taxes but I want everything like soccer fields for the small percentage they actually pay.

Another poster said the $'s spent on the 2 soccer fields in question works out to $5 of their annual bill but I suspect it's even smaller given the total cost to develop and maintain all of THPRD property and operations. So one again we have I want everything for nothing and will do what ever I can to tear something down vs. build something up.
