When Does Recruiting Get Ugly?

It is a boring subject....everyone recruits even the little guys try to get some of the bog players. Ever go to a small tourney and see a top player playing for a small club with his/her friends? Same stuff, but who cares. My kids has been recruited and players from our team recruited. It just doesn't matter. When the kids get to be about 16 there are only a few competitive teams left anyway....

Then maybe your team should have provided these players with more of what they wanted and they wouldn't be practicing with us. Just stating the obvious.

I don't know the young 96s coach, why don't you ask him since you seem to know so much about it?

This forum is constantly hijacked by whiners. I popped on to hope to hear about summer tournaments, but we get this tired topic.

We all get it. You think other club(s) recruit players and are evil, and the club your child plays for is as pure and ethical as can be. We understand that the parents and kids that choose to move to a team that is full of top-notch players are being manipulated by terrible coaches, and you and your child choose to stay on a team that is all about development.

So, good for you, we are all glad that you have been able to make the right decisions for your child and judge everyone else who doesn’t make the same decision you do.

How about you just be happy with the decisions you have made for your child, and let others make the right decision for their child. I never see them criticizing you for your choices, but I sure see you criticizing them.

No more on “recruiting” please, we all have heard it over and over again – we got it!

Simple solution for you then, don't play at that club. Whatever happened to if you can't say anything nice then don't say anything at all? If you're unhappy with a club then leave. That is the beauty of having so many choices. There is no reason to bash another club.

What if the person is not bashing another club, but their own club? Does that change the scenario? Doesn't a person within a club have the right to criticize the leadership? Or are the only options to blindly follow or bail?

Putting all the Thusc/Anti-Thusc aside for a second, an earlier post raised an excellent question. What as adults are we teaching our kids. Whether we are parents, Coaches, fans, whatever, these kids look to us as examples. I certainly agree end the whining, that is worthless, but what does this behavior show.

Would we as employers want employees like we are raising with these kids. Jumping from job to job whenever a better offer appears. Certainly it is OK to move to a better situation, but lets teach them to do it with class.

What type of Management are we displaying when we focus on recruiting rather than growing from within.

We may be surprised but kids notice all this stuff, and we need to be conscious of what we teach.

Win at all costs? Forget loyalty to who got you there, jump ship as far as a flashier ride comes along? Forget longterm planning and development for the future we want instant gratification.

Kind of a gruesome picture if you ask me.

The Thusc HC is alread in hot water with the OPL Group, so has handed his recruiting to someone else to keep his hands clean. Will be interesting how the OPL Group deals with this.

Agreed, it will be very interesting, as a large part of the reason for the breakoff was not liking OYSA rules, now what happens when they start violating their own rules. Unfortunately most of this will probably play out behind closed doors.

To the original poster, it would appear that recruiting is okay until it affects you personally. Then you are instantly labeled as a whiner and people want to ban you from this forum.

I truly believe that honesty is key in anything that you do.

I also know first hand that what at least one coach has impacted us. One reason is that clubs are not that excited about their star players participating in ODP because it has become a team wrecker of sorts. I know for my daughter she has participated in ODP for several years and there was never and overt recruiting problem going on. That changed this year. Yes they have attempted to recruit her. It has gone as far as this coach telling us that her soccer development could be stunted if she stays within our current club and team and that we should at least attend a few Sodium practicies.

It is a shame that the actions of one person can taint an accomplishment that a player has worked so hard for.

First, maybe the coach is right. Second, if you and your daughter don't like it, tell him to get lost. In my mind, that's a valuable lesson to learn - that you can't always control what's going on around you, but you can definitely control your own actions - an invaluable "teaching moment" presented by some recruiting.

Maybe the coach IS right. Maybe your daughter's development WOULD be stunted if she stays with her current team. Isn't it better to play and practice at the talent level of a team like Sodium than stay with your current team? Isn't that the whole philosophy of ODP? Getting all the best players together to play and develop?

i wish people would stop trying to justify recruiting. this is not college football and no youth soccer player is named lebron james. please stop trying to justify that recruiting is ok in YOUTH SOCCER. let the kids play where they want to play. these ego hungry coaches should not be recruiting - end of discussion.

As far as I know the kids can play where they want to play. I have never heard of them being threatened. It's always up to the parents and kids to decide no matter what anyone is saying to them. I appreciate it when a coach from another club offers me their advice on development and I have actually approached coaches from other teams with questions of my own.

My daughter was heavily recruited by SSC for almost two years. The coach was saying that she needed more of a challenge and wasn't getting enough at our current club. I appreciated his opinion but we decided to stay where we were at because she was happy and I'm happy with her development. In the end it has been the best for us.

Recruiting happens at every club. Get over it.
