And how do you know this? There were no JV records kept this year, and no playoffs. Or are you speaking of last year?

SK beat NK 3-2 in OT in JV championship game last week. Playoffs are usually done on one day but this year they split them up. It wasn't well organized or communicated by RIIL but that was the game. RIIL never posts up to date standings for JV but they must have the records in hand to notify the top 4.

I think the issue is that, on average, the JV teams across the state just aren't very good... allowing teams like NK and SK to shine more brightly. The question should not be "why are the NK and SK teams so good?" but "why are the other schools not so good?". Could it be as simple that schools like SK and NK draw from a deeper pool of talent... allowing them to field competitive teams at each level whereas other schools keep their best players on varsity, regardless of grade?

As for why NK and SK can't seem to translate JV success to varsity... part of it is what is suggested above... and some of it may be coaching (certainly true of NK... not sure about SK).

RIIL has always treated JV like an afterthought. They say they are not responsible for updating the JV stats on their website leaving it to the coaches.

The NK and SK teams traditionally do well at Middle School as well so it's not that JV is bad across the state thing. NK has three middle schools (Wickford, Jamestown and Davisville) that all do well individually, so you would imagine the HS coaches get a bounty to feed their JV and Varsity teams. All those teams coming together probably force some initial integration issues with the HS coaches, but KF seems to always get it figured out by playoff time winning on the boys side last year. SK on the other hand is already fully blended at middle school and their boys and girls always doing well at CCMS. This has translated well for the SK JV's who are always in the mix for the JV state championship, and the NK Boys who are always a threat for the boys state championship, but it does seem odd that the SK boys and NK girls aren't real threats year in and year out. At least this year SK has a fighting chance to be the bride's maid.

High school soccer is all about the coach. There's a reason the same schools seem to make the final four year after year. It's because the coaches have figured out a way to combine their club players and school only players and create a winning team. Smithfield girls, Cumberland girls, NK boys, Shea boys, Portsmouth girls always seem to be in the mix.

A strong feeder program from town soccer and the middle school is a big help. But neither is a guarantee of wins once kids get to the high school. Lincoln is a good example of having a strong town and middle school program that fails at the varsity level. Similar sized town as Smithfield. Similar level of losses to private schools. Both have great town programs and great middle school programs. Yet Smithfield is in the mix every year and Lincoln wins only 2 games. The difference is the coaching.

Lasalle girls are a good example of how having a bad coach can negate having the biggest talent pool. It's all about the coach.

I'm not so sure I'd throw the Portsmouth guy in there. Hey's blown it with some outstanding teams in the past. He got lucky last year when a national player level talent fell in his lap and even then he almost blew it.

How can you say he almost blew it? He went up against a very strong LaSalle team. If Portsmouth had lost, no one would have faulted him because he went in as the underdog. Yeah, he had MK but she wasn't the one scoring all the goals in each series. They had a very well rounded team that ground it out to the end.

They had a great team. Very talented all around, but let's face it. They depended on MK. They proved it this year with their struggle to score goals. They depended heavily on her last year to distribute the ball and to dribble around everyone to score goals. Not saying they didn't have other talent. They had a very strong defense, which was also proven this year with the few goals they had scored against them. All of that being said, the coach really is awful. Even with almost all of the girls on his team playing full year soccer and tremendous talent across the board on his team, he still couldn't make it out of the quarter finals, just as he hasn't been able to do for years (excluding last year).

Without MK they don't even make the playoffs...nuff said!

Cumberland and Smithfield in the final. Cumberland lost to Mnt Hope in the first game of the season... they have improved drastically since then. They managed to finish tied for first in the toughest division in the league. Mnt Hope was in an easier division and played less games then Cumberland.

If you were to ask who are the top eight strikers in D1, Cumberland has 4 of them. They play 3 up top and their attacking center mid all can finish. The only way Mt Hope beats Cumberland, they will need to score a minimum of three goals. It can be done, Cumby's keeper is fine, but nothing to write home about. Should be a great match. The winner of this match will then beat Smithfield in the final. Good luck all.

Not to mention their attacking mid is fourth for D1 point scorers and started the season at defensive until moving to attacking. She's going to come up big tonight!

What a stupid statement, Ports had a solid team without MK and they would have made the top 10 teams and been in the playoffs. A great player makes a solid team better, see Mt Hope and Cumberland this year. See the M sisters on Lasalle a few years back. But a great player can't do anything without some talent around her.... see MK at St. George presently.
