Sounds like a lot of whining from the losers. Reality is all club teams put these teams together from multiple communities. South County teams have kids from all over. This is State Cup not Superliga. The only thing that needs to change is the ability to play in USYSA championship and also SRI Cup. If a player competes in one, they should not be allowed to compete in the other.

Yes, and how great it is to be able to afford it. Have fun paying for Bayside to be the "wild card" while a town team goes to PA as champions

Good questions, let me answer. First off region 1 has an odd number of states, so to make all brackets the same size there is a wildcard for each age and it is handed out by lottery in each age. This year RI got it for U12 8v8.
Second, one of the rules of entering State Cup is that if you advance you MUST go to regionals and then Nationals if you advance there. So, they really have no choice.

As far as Portsmouth and their U12 team, who cares what they did? It was all within the rules. If parents on the team have an issue, they'll let the coach know I'm sure. Will say to them that they should enjoy this trip because they'll never have as strong a team as they do right now. The SSS girls will be rostered on SSS state cup roster next year. U12 8v8 is the only group where town teams consistently have a chance to win. Premier teams usually enter U11 teams that have not played much together. At U12 the premier teams enter 11v11. Then after that the Premiers keep adding players each year and town team lose players. Just the way it is. South County U14G are the rare exception of not losing players, but they're not adding any either, and they lost this year and probably will never win again at State Cup. It's just the way it goes.

Actually it's very sad and what these guys have done to use their positions as coaches and leaders to get what they want. It's like RI politics, always someone looking out for themselves instead of the people they represent.
They should resign. Can't understand why a President of the town program wouldn't have the best interests of his team and why he would allow outsiders to take away playing time from original girls. Then you have the other guy who flat out leaves his team to play on another team. These two should be banned from ever coaching any sports teams.

No nationals for U12. Only U14 and above.

What is Portmouth-mom's obsession with money? She was making the same caddy comments during the game as well. Region 1 is just another travel weekend. Ride your one trick pony and enjoy the tournament. Don't worry the U11's will just blend in with the 9 teams Bayside is sending to Regionals so they won't steal any thunder. You will have the money to continue your Botox treatments next year. Good news is there won't be any other U11 teams at regionals for you to worry about.

Excellent post. I think Portsmouth did an excellent job winning it. It is a competitive program and the State Title is what you play for. They played hard and were clearly the best team - they are the State Champs for RI.

It is easy to mock the Bayside parents for paying and losing to a town team but take a step back and look at the future of the programs. Things can change but who is ready to deal with Bayside U11's next year? There doesn't seem to be another U11 team ready to challenge them. There is no Bruno U11, Bayside United is in flux, not sure about BW. Where are these U11 girls and U10 girls for Portsmouth? All I saw the other day was #12 who will not be playing for a State Cup run again with Portsmouth. Bayside is built for three to four year run, this Portsmouth team was equivilent to 2003 Florida Marlins. They had a one year window to win it and they did, but they have never been back to the post season since.

Speaking as a Parent .... I am thrilled that my daughter is on this Bayside team. And for all the silly comments on "why would we want to go to PA as a wildcard when they are not State Champs" Gee ... I don't kmow maybe because it will be a chance in a lifetime to play the best competition, have fun at Hershey park with friends and family ... it will be a great trip for everyone. This Bayside team has a great future looming the next couple of years, Portsmouth's future is done by June 30th, 2012.

It would be easy to believe you, but you just saw another opportunity to slam Portsmouth. You need to win and lose with class, Portsmouth was simply the better team that day. It takes nothing away from the Bayside team, they beat alot of teams to get to the finals. But as a Bayside parent, you should just simply acknowledge the fact that another team won, be happy to get the chance to go to PA and say nothing more about what you think the future of the winning team is. Then, maybe then, you can teach your daughters good sportsmanship along with good soccer.

And that's it isnt it, at the end of the day teach the kids to be humble in victory and gracefull in defeat. Sadly, the parents need to learn the lesson first. Congrats to both teams, and all teams moving on, in what will be a wonderful experience. Whether or not you experience victory on the pitch, make sure the kids take in the sights and sounds and enjoy the moment. Make it special FOR THE KIDS, it's not about the parents and thumping their chest, everyone needs to get over themselves here, its not about us as adults!!!!

Pot calling the kettle black. You were doing well right up until the end. But you speak of sportsmanship? Portsmouth parents as a collective group ignored the golden rule of cheering for their own team and not cheering against the other team. Then they mocked and jeered and the Bayside parents and players the entire game as well. They were insulting girls while they were playing and laughing about it. Class was something lost by their parents at that game.

Jeez you parents need to stop the bickering...It's u12 for goodness sake! And just an FYI from a now u16 parent who has been there and done the 8v8 (2008, in rainy Portland, ME) the 8v8s were a complete after-thought for the tournament directors. After a ton of rain, they stuck us on a tiny corner of a field at Bowdoin where we watched as someone in a tournament shirt spray painted a wrong-sized field for us. The parents were surprised, but the girls didn't care, it was fun for them. Just keep it in perspective. Enjoy the trip. And parents, remember it's not the World Cup! Good Luck and have fun...try not to ruin your kid's soccer experience like some parents seem determined to.

Not slamming anyone, just an obseravtion on the future of the teams. Plenty of ribbing from the Portsmouth side on the weaknesses of U11 Bayside team and the money the parents pay for that team.

I repeat .... Portsmouth is clearly the better team, that can not be disputed by anyone who watched the match. My OP was a discussion on where does it go from here. This group of Bayside players have a lot to look forward to. They should be back with at leat 10-11 returning players next year. All I commented about was what is the future of the Portsmouth team? Will they assemble for a U13 run? Will they have a U12 team next year? Not slamming anyone, just asking a couple of questions. I have no doubt that this Portsmouth team will have great success in PA and I am sure we will all run into one another. We are all from RI .... let's enjoy those days in PA with our kids.

I am not a Portsmouth parent. Just someone who was reading the thread, became disgusted and chimed in. If what you say (mocking kids by parents) happened at that game with young kids, it is just as awful. Now we have 2 teams of kids where sportsmanship was obviously lost in the frenzy. Very sad, while the parents are arguing about who has a better future, what parents were obnoxious, how many guest players, the KIDS from both teams were most likely just happy to be there . They have an opportunity that not to many kids have, don't ruin it for them.

I honestly think we were not at the same game. I heard plenty of positive encouragement from both sides. I also heard one Bayside dad who was over the top obnoxious and intent on antagonizing anyone around him. He openly encouraged the girls to use violence and it got so bad his own daughter asked him to shut up. He gave the Portsmouth team no credit and repeatedly shouted "I hope your proud of beating a bunch of 11 year olds". Bayside is a very good team and many parents from both sides showed respect and class and some unfortunately did not and continue to perpetuate this silly argument.
