As we all know by 12-13 everyone who is committed catches up to the ones who started training early. As you know with your soccer experience their are plenty of Town team players who can easily walk on to the so called Academy clubs by name.
At an older age a non-ECNL player may get picked up by an ECNL team but you don't see droves of non-ECNL players making ECNL clubs at the older age groups. But ECNL-started players who get cut due to size or speed will quickly get snapped up by another club really quickly.
And it is rare for a non-ECNL to go to an ECNL A team. More often than not they go to a B team.
I have to laugh at my ex-ECNL parent friends who think their new club is just as good as as the previous ECNL club and are paying ECNL prices. That new club's players never get picked for any girl's or women's national team pools or go to Top Twenty D1 women's soccer schools. But they insist their kids are on par with the ECNL counterparts they just left. By U16-U17 they should have a clue.

Here in our little metro area you see more parity but that is because you have millions of humans crammed in a small geographical area compared to the environs of wide-open spaces like Texas or Kansas.

ECNL starts at 14. No reason to play for a so called Academy Club by name only team at 8-9 years old. Yes by 13-14 if your child has the talent they should get to an ECNL club. I agree as a team the ECNL team might be better overall , but their are plenty of players who can walk on ECNL teams. Happens all the time.
