Players in academies are privileged, some players going from club to club, Red Bull’s to CSA to PDA to Philly Union and back, and the coaches just start the newly acquired players. There is no competition.

So when you tell those players they have to tryout like everyone else, they break down, like the low mental toughness they have.

Also, it wasn’t until DA, now MLS Next, where I first saw a team get outplayed, and give up. It WASN’T at the town level where I first saw that. And the teams are exactly same, so there was no reason for mental breakdowns!

ODP gives kids a chance to get out of the *****ty situation they’re in. They should use it!
Truth, noticed the same when comparing ODP to GA.....is that the equivalent of MLS next on the boys side?

Many of these teams are actually told they cannot do ODP because it is not worth it because the level of competition is less than ECNL/GA. ODP also conflicts directly with ECNL practices, games and tournaments. Exceptions might be made for deep bench players.

ODP is beneficial for smaller clubs and township players who are top players on their team respectfully. The training by ODP coaches is honestly a joke. The games are worth it for the players but the ultimate goal is to make it to the summer invite only training camp. That actually just changed a few years ago.

As a parent that has now been on both sides, my opinion is in line with the above. Players in EDP or lesser leagues should make an effort to play in ODP. Players in ECNL or GA should avoid ODP with the exception of the players who do not get a lot of playing time.
ODP doesn't just conflict with ECNL. EDP/USYS and GA all have games at the same time. Not all ECNL coaches or clubs think ODP is a waste and are fine with players doing it. ODP even states that they aren't their to develop the players which is why a lot of what people think are very good players don't get chosen. They look for players that are unselfish, that are coachable, with skills and speed. They want players that can play with others.

If your coach says that doing anything other then their brand of anything is the only way to go then your kids going to have a major shock come college.

Why do you think they call ODP the Olympic Development Programme? It teaches the Olympic values and it’s a great opportunity for exposure.

That’s why it’s superior training and exposure as compared to USYS GA etc. ODP is worth every penny. High level players like Carli Lloyd etc were ODP players if that tells you anything.

ODP training at the boys U11 and U10 was disorganized and amateurish. Lots of standing around, basic drills, groupings large so fewer touches. Very little useful feedback. Competition low. Most club teams training would be better use of time. Wonder why ODP charges anything at all. But now at least I know better than to continue with ODP.

ODP is the highest level in the sport if you can withstand the rigors. Definitely a step up over the local leagues mentioned, but you have to be ready to compete for a spot with the best. Carli Lloyd played ODP and achieved great things!

How would you compare ODP to the GDA? Very confusing stuff out there in youth soccer. Our ODP coach is pushing their programme but it does conflict with the GDA one. Why can’t these leagues get on the same page for the good of the girls.

ODP is superior and well worth it, go with your gut.

The same nonsense about ODP being elite and all that.... maybe if your little Mia plays for the local team where there are 3-4 better players and the rest are there for exercise. Most upper level teams have groups of players that are pushing each other in all of their sessions and don't need to pay more money and travel over an hour to play with comparable players from other areas. ODP = money grab

ODP is a great program that can complement GA and give your child exposure that the league just cannot offer. Top ODP coaches and the ability to play with the best in the state, region and nation if you make the national pool. Hopefully your club understands and accepts the opportunity ODP presents.

Not sure why people complain about ODP. Sure it is a little more then most other states but it is still a worth while program. For a lot of these players this may be the only time the get to play teams from different states other then NYE, EPA, NJ and MD.

ODP provides an opportunity for top players from local leagues, MOSA, SJGSL, GA, EDP etc to play together in a competitive environment which is an upgrade often times from what their club offers. I think the guy that runs made Carli Lloyd who she is as a player.

You mean JG didn't turn a scrappy little girl named Carli into a world famous soccer player. If you listen to him he is the only one responsible for it and if he hadn't come along she would be flipping burgers at McDonalds.
