Currently, although not fair, this is how it works.... you would ideally have your child play on an MLS Next or ECNL team because of the completion level...
CSA North Bergen Pre-Academy, CSA North Bergen Pre-Academy 2, CSA Monmouth Green & White and TSF Academy Blue & White will all be out of EDP and in the North East Academy League starting in the fall of 2022. The Following year PDA will join that group and be in the MLS Next league with their top teams and 2nd teams. The New York Red Bulls pre-Academy teams also leaves EDP this Fall (Sep 2022) and play in the Acela league with Philadelphia Union and Real JFC among other top PA/DE teams before moving to the MLS Next league. On top of all of those teams no longer playing in EDP... Both STA and Match Fit play in the ECNL league with their 2nd teams playing ECRL. PDA has their 2nd or 3rd teams play in the ECNL league as well after MLS Next teams. Then Morris Elite plays in the USL league. Furthermore, rosters expand as the teams move from 9v9 to 11v11. You have to figure a lot of the top players from teams not listed earlier will join those teams further weakening the remaining teams. So in total: 2 CSA North teams, 2 CSA Monmouth teams, 2 TSF teams, 3/4 PDA teams, 2 Real JFC teams, 2 Match Fit teams, 2 STA teams and 1 Morris Elite team, plus the kids that are lucky enough from NJ to make an MLS Academy like NY Red Bull, NYC FC or Philadelphia Union..... all those kids say good-bye to EDP within the next year or 2. The talent level of EDP overall plummets. Approximately 18 or so 11v11 teams will be gone from EDP with the majority of them being the highest level teams/kids.
There will still be some good talent left in EDP, just much, much less. Some families wont like the travel that is required in those leagues or the fact that MLS doesnt allow the majority of players to play on their HS teams. EDP manages the Mid Atlantic conferences for those teams that are left behind to provide them some better competition and that is team by team basis instead of entire clubs being in the other leagues. That will mix some of the better NJ teams with some of the better PA teams that aren't playing in the top leagues to get them better league games during the season. The same thing happens in the other states as well though so the top PA teams will be in MLS next and ECNL too..
Those teams that leave for other leagues will not only be playing in different leagues, but also in different tournaments/ showcases as well. Example MLS Showcase in CA or FL or ECNL showcases in CA, AZ, SC, FL, TX or VA. Those teams wont be going to tournaments like Jeff Cup or any of the EDP Cups and clubs from outside the leagues are not allowed to enter the tournaments/showcases.
Thank you - very good information. What is the difference between MLS next and ECNL?
