Clarification on this possible age change

Not looking to get into whether this is a good idea or a bad idea. Just want some clarification. My daughter is in 7th grade. The cut off for grades in our town is October 31st. Her birthday is in September. She is a 2012. If this new August 1 to July 31 timeline happens does she stay with her current team (in terms of year) or does she get bumped down?

It's too early for 'clarification' because nothing has been announced so nobody knows how all the tiny details will play out.

The split would be 8/2011 to 7/2012 for U14 and 8/2012 to 7/2013 for U13.

That’s what we figured. Sucks for her and her team if it ends up being that way. Guess we will see how is does shake out.

Nothing prevents a club from allowing a player to play up and not disrupt team’s dynamics already established.

What % of players are trapped? Doubt the entire system is flagging just to accommodate a very small segment of the entire ecosystem given that 50-70% of those 8th graders will quit during HS. The change will happen. Stuff gets moved around and then settles again. World not ending. Scholarships are still out there for the taking.

At the highest levels of youth soccer very few players- if you are good enough you are good enough to play up. Let's disrupt everything so the ECNL directors daughters have a better chance of being recruited.

I looked at the posted graduation years for North Atlantic a couple months back and it was something like 17% on average on ECNL rosters, or about 3.5 players per roster. It was higher for the oldest age group, which makes sense given they started soccer under the old system

But that scenario would be entirely up to each club

if MLSn stays birth year and ECNL makes the move, then on the boys side watch the talented May/Jun/Jul ECNL kids move to MLSn and watch the talented Aug/Sep/Oct MLSn kids move to ECNL - what a sh#t show

Why is it August 1 when nearly every state has September 1 as the age cut off for new students. I guess someone's kid on the board has a child with an August birthdate. You can easily look it up. every state is September 1 but soccer is August 1. So there you go this is not truly about grade.

Kids born in August will be playing down in grade. So a 7th grader who is one of the youngest in his/her class in school will play with kids a grade lower. Does this make any sense?

lowest common denominator. There are 5 or 6 states where the date is 8/1. I think Indiana, Missouri, North Dakota, Kentucky, West Virginia, Hawaii. A more permissive cutoff means inclusion for kids in these states. An earlier date always gives optionality play with the grade cohort or the age.

Right - its a national standard, not one for just New Jersey

If the goal is to get the most kids playing with class year, you want the cutoff to be the earliest of the different state school cutoffs. This is strictly a result of the fact that you can play up with class, but not down. If they picked 9/1, which is the most common school cutoff, it aligns with most. But then August kids in an 8/1 cutoff state are trapped. Conversely, if they pick 8/1, August kids in a 9/1 school cutoff state just play up with class and it all works out.

8/1 is the earliest cutoff, so it makes perfect sense.
