The ID events do mean something and most clubs try to not send anyone who does not belong because it reflects really poorly on the a club coach/doc. They want their recommendations to be taken seriously. For the most part the kids there were all pretty known and for the teams we're familiar with, it was who you would have expected.

I won't say there are no strange nominations ever, but the idea that the entire thing is political and meaningless implies that no one is there on merit. Coaches and DOCs are already ego maniacs and protective of their reputations so they generally don't go out of their way to push people forward who will make them look silly. At most, it is a tie breaker and yes, sometimes a less connected kid may get left out.
