"Certainly, the idea of government being more effective in terms of how it runs education or social programs, there’s a lot of opportunity for improvement there," Gates said in the podcast. "In terms of revenue collection, you wouldn’t want to just focus on the ordinary income rate, because people who are wealthy have a rounding error of ordinary income."
He continued: "They have income that just is the value of their stock, which if they don’t sell it, it doesn’t show up as income at all, or if it shows up, it shows over in the capital gains side. So the ability of hedge fund people, various people — they aren’t paying that ordinary income rate."
"The one thing that never gets much press — the IRS shows the statistics for the top 400 people of the highest income and the rate they pay," Gates went on to say. "Anyway, you should look at that. It’s about a 20 percent rate, so it has nothing to do with the 39.6 marginal ordinary income rate. So it’s a misfocus. If you focus on that, you’re missing the picture."
During the podcast, Gates also weighed in on a number of ideas that Ocasio-Cortez and more progressive lawmakers, including Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) have championed, including “modern monetary theory,” saying it is "some crazy talk,” adding “It will come back and bite you.”
As described by the American Monetary Institute (AMI), a non-profit charity funded to describe monetary reforms for the average citizen, MMT "shows a lack of respect for empirical facts" and "stretches and twists the meaning of words beyond normal usage."Comment

Anthony Weiner's laptop.
The trove of documents turned over by the FBI, in response to a lawsuit by the transparency group Judicial Watch, also included discussions by former FBI lawyer Lisa Page concerning a potential quid pro quo between the State Department and the FBI -- in which the FBI would agree to downgrade the classification level of a Clinton email in exchange for more legal attache positions that would benefit the agency abroad. There was no indication such a quid pro quo ever took place.
And, in the face of mounting criticism aimed at the FBI, the documents revealed that Comey quoted the 19th century poet Ralph Waldo Emerson by assuring his subordinates, "To be great is to be misunderstood."]/i]Comment

NBC News proudly notes that “Meet the Press” is the longest-running program on network television. But it’s unlikely anyone at the network will be looking back with pride on this week’s show. Almost two full years after Rep. Adam Schitt (D., Calif.) told NBC he had seen “more than circumstantial evidence” that associates of Donald Trump had colluded with Russia to rig the 2016 election, the network not only welcomed him back without demanding that he finally produce the evidence to support his claim. NBC gave him a platform to make new allegations.
This seemed to be the moment for Mr. Todd to demand that Mr. Schitt, who is now chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, finally produce the evidence he has long claimed to have seen. But instead Mr. Todd simply asked Mr. Schitt to “explain the parameters of your investigation, where you’ve expanded. How far back into his finances do you plan to look?”
Without defending his earlier claim, Mr. Schitt proceeded to explain how he was now setting off in search of evidence of “a different form of collusion,” perhaps involving the President’s finances. The theory seems to be that Mr. Trump was focused on closing a sweet deal to develop a Moscow hotel. Your humble correspondent is not the first to note that there are probably easier and cheaper ways to secure corrupt real estate deals than to get elected President of the United States.
