I would be embarrassed if my kid attended college at well over half of the D1 schools here. But hey “D1 or bust!”

Yes, that's usually how it works. Well over half of schools are typically average or below-average.

Many of them have a high acceptance rate. Obviously not all. The list is cringy. We target schools outside of showcases that are academically appropriate for my daughter. No need to travel here to be seen by academically weak schools. It’s time to grow up soon and make choices based on things other than soccer. But hey. As long as your kid plays D1. She can apply to be my kids PA in a couple years with her degree worth less than the paper it’s printed on.

Here is something that will make some of you uncomfortable. My kid isn’t looking for high academic school, shes looking for a good fit academically, soccer, social, etc… She talked to Harvard and decided it wasn’t for her. She’s NHS (FWIW these days) but just doesn’t want to spend all her time in a book, she’s a field rat. Im fine with that, she landed at a good school with a good reputation and alumni network. It’s not Ivy but the fit is good for other reasons. So your kid is good at school, mine is good at soccer, I hope we all find good fits for our kids.

No one will be more embarrassed than the dads who forced their kids to play D1 soccer, when they graduate and realize their degree is a joke and soccer is over, and Dad sure did enjoy those years of living through them but now they’re left with no marketable skills and a joke degree in COMMUNICATIONS. I bet they can get hired as the JV coach at some rinky dink HS and start the cycle over.

Why not choose to play D1 (if you have that choice) and also choosing a major that you think will be valuable later on?

There aren’t many MA kids going to no name D1 schools in the Midwest or Texas. At our club, I see some P5’s that are good academic schools, Ivies, and a mix of mid-majors—Northeastern, Holy Cross, UMass, Fairfield….

If you think wear you went to college matters little after your first job, MAN. You’re gonna be super disappointed when you find out that which division you played in college matters…..never.

academics should always be the driving factor. If you find that at a D1 school, great. But the athletic division of the school shouldn’t be driving your daughters decision.

I see a lot of parents on here simply not ready to accept their kids glory days are winding down. It’s time to stop finding your worth in your kids soccer team (and isn’t that really what it’s all about? Why else do dads come on here and spend hours debating the “best” leagues, teams, clubs? If your kid is happy that’s what matters yet we see every single day parents assigning such value to something so utterly meaningless).

Bottom line is that kids should be looking for the best fit academically for them. If the soccer works out, great. But that ECNL list of colleges? A huge percentage are joke schools. Time to stop worrying about posting your kid is going D1 and start thinking about that post soccer life. It’s coming. Quickly.

So I am reading this as Dad who realizes his daughter will not play D1, so wants to flip the narrative to academics. Nice try but let it go, the school fit has to be the number 1 factor, but the financials are a close second and if soccer can help with that then thats great.

And if it isn’t a good fit the transfer portal makes it easier now to move. The difficult part is to listen to parents compare a school with a 22% acceptance rate and one with an 80% acceptance rate…it does come down to best fit but also what your can can achieve. So many great soccer players also have great academics. A lower gpa won’t mean you won’t play soccer somewhere and all within d1,2 & 3 but it will limit your choices. Academics matter with the travel in college soccer a 3.5 in non-honors is not the same as 3.9 in all AP/honors. Statistically the kid that has more rigor can likely handle missing classes and making up work when the team travels and when mommy and daddy aren’t holding their hand.

Top programs are hand holders, the academic advantages that athletes have is insane, The schools have a vested interest in making sure their athletes succeed in the classroom and put dollars behind that interest. Even the schools that are harder to get into will make sure your student athlete succeeds, if they don’t, then it certainly won’t be because the school failed them.

Was great to get to play both SUSA & Scorpions this past weekend. SUSA is a really top level team and Scorpions was very good as well. If these two were the 4th & 5th place teams in the conference you ECNL folks are very lucky.

We are very happy at NEFC, but I am envious of the level of competition that your girls get to play against every week. Good luck on your seasons!
