The idea is to play where you are not the best, nor worst, player on the pitch. If that means playing up, because you are so far beyond the quality of others in your age group, so be it.

Far too often, however, people use playing up to exaggerate their abilities (or their kid's abilities). My D has played up on occasion, but it was due to necessity more than some supah-doopah outlier. She held her own, but when it's done it was done as a favor to the club.

As has mine, and I don't understand the allure, hence the question. Oakwood has 7 2007’s playing up last year, now these two are going up 2 years. Meanwhile, their 2007 was getting slaughtered in a real weak league.

      Makes no sense.

More often than not players playing up are 1) bigger/faster/more physically mature than their peers, not that they're necessarily significantly better players. By middle school those advantages start to fade as more kids hit puberty and the presence or lack of skills becomes more critical. 2) Kids of parents who over estimate their kids skill level. Just because Colton is the top scorer on a mediocre team doesn't mean he's that skilled.

Well run clubs avoid play ups. Besides the fact that most kids shouldn't, it opens up a whole ugly can of worms once you start. Letting them play up two years is nothing but a pathetic attempt to keep them and everyone sees that.

agree. the ginga girls are good but would not have looked out of place on any of the top local 07 teams.

It’s the parents. It’s always the parents.

and it seems in OW's case also weak management. Why did they have that many players playing up at all? Sounds like they couldn't fill rosters. Like an Oprah giveaway You play up! And you play up! When a club is desperate to keep kids they start bending to overbearing parents.

Actually I know both Stars teams very well and the Ginga girls are by far much stronger players than anyone on either team. At least for now. They easily could play up, and are even better than the two Stars players that do play up.

This is not factual but keep telling yourself that.

Starting to think the Ginga girls are fictional characters...

Very weak management; poorly run club, and definitely an issue filling rosters.
