Some long car rides to a pay-for-play club’s complex. It’s pretty damn embarrassing for an MLS Academy program to drive an hour for “home” games. Nice job Mr. Kraft.

If the Revs don’t care about college soccer and have no intention of helping players with recruiting why do they knowingly fill 95% of their rosters with players interested in making a college team? Isn’t that both counterproductive and irresponsible at the same time on the part of the parents and Revs?

Of course it is. And again, the two goals are not incompatible. A good DA roster at u15 and u17 should be a mix of 3-4 actual professional prospects (more if possible) and a collection of very good players who are serious D1 prospects. All would benefit from high level training and competition, and, as other academies have shown, there might be a few of the college aspirants who find that they can transition to the pros (that is how the good academies--Philly, Dallas, LA, Seattle, etc--all work). Revs poor coaching and chaotic organization has left them with few, if any, actual pro prospects and have driven away anyone who is serious about D1 soccer. D1 recruiting is far stronger out of Bolts, NEFC and GPS. Result of their negligence is the shambles of the roster that they have now. Good players have been ignoring their program for years.

Easily answered - 1) few parents here love soccer or even understand it; they tolerate it and even self-identify with it as “soccer dads/moms”, but few love the game; 2) a college education here is now a must-have regardless with whether a kid is smart enough to be in college or whether they get a useful degree; it’s now like a cellphone - have to have it; and 3) if you put #1 and 2 together, if the Revs didn’t promote college as an option, no one would show up. This whole Revs thread is a vicious cycle that shows how pro soccer here has struggled to get respect. It goes something like this:

          1) Why don’t the Krafts invest more in the Revs and the academy?
          2) You mean all our kids aren’t going to be drafted and make milllons? What’s the point?
          3) Ok, so if my kid isn’t a world-class player, he can still get a fat scholarship to a top college, right?
          4) Oh, this soccer thing is harder than it looks; let’s just bitch and complain.
          5) Because of #2 thru 4, the US can’t develop good players and the kids who would otherwise be life-long fans drift away from a game they love because their parents are disappointed it wasn’t the payday they were looking for in terms of pro contracts or sweet college scholarships.
          6) the Revs like most MLS teams have to go overseas to fill their rosters.
          7) Back to #1, why don’t the Krafts invest more in the Revs and the academy? Rinse and repeat.

The DA Cup structure will only serve to accelerate the diversion of players on the high level college track away from the Revs. The Revs simply can’t compete with the likes of Philly, NYCFC and NYRB. The GA Cup consistently demonstrates the Revs’ shortcomings but that was an isolated tournament. Failing in the DA Cup is failing for all to see in the regular season. Missing the playoffs hurts your brand, perception is reality in the world of club soccer. The Revs Academy made a conscious effort to downplay any college commitments this year while at the same time highlighting all the trappings of a professional club that they enjoy. It was all homegrowns and Academy players traveling and training with the First Team. The Academy has truly divorced itself from the college commitment process in an effort to attract less academically inclined soccer players with a hunger to go pro. It’s not a bad strategy but for the fact that the vast majority of eligible players have a completely different mindset. When you couple this change in philosophy with the new USSDA competition format a perfect storm is created. They don’t want college bound players. They won’t help them with recruiting. They can’t win enough against MLS teams to be successful and make the playoffs. As the performance drops and the parents realize the goals they have for their player aren’t a priority of the organization those on the inside will seek to leave while others on the outside decline to join. There is no way this ends well. The region winds up with a diminished opportunity to play high level soccer as the Academy implodes. The Revs issuing waivers for the first time is the first sign of panic on their part. Sadly the damage to this years season my be at an irreparable point by the time those players rejoin the team. It will be interesting to see how the rosters change over the course of the season and over the break next summer.

The damage was done years ago. It's been a good 4-5 years since the Revs have attracted the best players in the region. They have been playing elsewhere.

The 4th keeper on this team travels 100 miles to get to Revs. Ouch!

The best players walked out of the Revs. Sorry your kid got cut, or was never selected.

The Revs are listing him on the roster and refusing to release him so he can’t play for a DA team in CT.

Sounds like something they would do, but there is an appeals process the family can go through
