This year, they've announced a pretty short list, but they announced earlier than many others so presumably others are coming. The new coach has already been successful in raising them out of the cellar, but that's a tough spot if he barely has any money (so you focus mainly on local kids who get the benefit of in-state tuition?).
All three kids in the U Mass announcement signed NLI's meaning they got some money. But yet two are in state. If the focus was mainly on in state tuition kids then why waste funds and sign NLI's with in state kids?

Being in state they don't have to give them very much to make an offer attractive. An NLI has to be signed even if it's for $5 bucks. $10K off the in state price is much more attractive than the same $10K off the out of state price. Being local the coach had more opportunities to see them play as well. If he doesn't have a big travel budget it's tougher to go to recruiting events or bring players in for visits. It isn't like there isn't talent in the state. Some coaches like to stay more local, others shop more nationally/internationally

Agree with it or not, the new coach is sending signals as to how he plans to recruit.

Big question remains as to whether the scholarship situation has changed or not. If you only have 2 or 2.5, it substantially impinges on what you can do- do you just go for 2 studs or whack it up into a bunch of little pieces? If you choose "a bunch of little pieces," then no use flying around trying to lure out-of state/country kids. The prior poster is spot on though- getting a "small" scholarship there (or maybe even no $) is going to pan out better financially for most in-state kids (ignoring merit and financial aid).

op here - my hunch is he still has very limited $ so he's making the money he does have go the furthest. That is easier to do with in state kids. Besides, it's not like MA doesn't have talented players. UCONN women's team is heavily CT based and they do just fine. This is a great example of where not all D1 programs are the same

Not sure this is apples-to-apples. Don't UConn women's have money? Not going to claim to follow this team, but all the goals, the goalie and lots of the starters look to be non-CT (CT has maybe 4 or 5 starters). UMass mens could be great if they had some money- great coach, strong MA pool of players, improving academic reputation (although still a bit maligned). Even with 4 or 5 scholarships they could try to land 4 or 5 studs up the center and supplement with MA kids getting a bargain with the in-state tuition. But looks like they're doublin down with their focus on football.

AA is transferring to UConn? They already have 6 goalies.

Holy shi* I thought you were joking but they do - 1 is a senior), 4 frosh and 1 junior who played all the games. As a GK why would you go to a program with that many keepers? I guess if you just cared about the school. Chances are you'll never play

Assume it is/will be the Berkshire center back (who I heard is going to Williams)

Get whoever you're talking about up on the list. If he's the best 2016/2017 player in MA and committed then he needs to be up there.

"AA is transferring to UConn? They already have 6 goalies"...past tense, a certain keeper will be heading south to a prominent D1 program
