I don't think so in D1 (or at least I've never seen it). But you can play one place in the fall and transfer elsewhere for the next semester and participate in the limited spring training the NCAA allows. (This subject to the one-time transfer exception/permission that is so often used in women's soccer.)

What is this exception you are talking about? My reading of the letter of intent that we signed is that my daughter owes them a 1 year commitment to attend the school. As I understand it, if my daughter transfers before the end of the year she has to sit out next year. I have also been advised that in order to even talk to other coaches she must get a release and asking for that release can make a situation go bad pretty soon. Another question, is if my daughter quites the team but stays in school does she loose the athletic money immediately and we now responsible for the tuition for the balance of this semester and the next?

What if you get kicked off the team or are cut? Are you now a free agent?

There is a one time exception under the NCAA rules if it is agreed to by her current school and yes you can transfer in the middle of the year so it must work. These details may not have been included in your school's version of the letter of intent and you need consent form the sending school.

She does need to get a release to speak with other coaches. She will need to target the schools she wants to speak with and the sending coach/school will have to agree. I have heard that you can post a general release someplace on the NCAA website but I never saw this done (not did I look too hard.) The releases get faxed to the potential transfer schools usually. Yes a bad situation can get worse but you'd think they'd want to know sooner rather than later that moeny will be freed up.

Whether she loses the athletic money right away depends on the coach/school/AD and perhaps if there were an infraction that mandates such loss (I only know of one child quiting and the deal was he kept the money through the remainder of the year.)

The money is the big bogie. Last year several of my daughter's teammates quit over christmas and supposedly got their money yanked and had to pay for the second semester. Once mine heard that she decided to stick it out to the end of the year but they made her life miserable once they did figure out she was leaving. We actually did a lot through cut outs so we didn't have to get the release until we had figured out most of the puzzle. It was really hard finguring that out though and we spent a lot of weekends over the winter revisiting schools. We found finding the situation to transfer to a lot more difficult than the original scholarship was. Most schools had already used up their money and those that hadn't were generally bad programs. She didn't want to jump from the kettle into the fire. In addition there was almost no academic money available by the time she was applying to new schools. The only players that I know of that had a relatively easy time transfering where the playing time and money worked out were those who figured out they were leaving almost as soon as they got to traing camp.

                What does that mean?

Same way they did the early recruitment only in reverse. They had their former club coach contact the schools they were interested in and negotiated through them.

I would be very careful about that becuase you could PO the current coach and they might not give you either release.

My kid transferred at the end of the year - short notice- and notifed a handful of schools. Not all had money but she ended up with three offers identical to what she had where she was leaving. I beleive these schools had money because they too had transfers and money unexpectedly freed up.

Always that option but you leave a whole lot up to chance and you still have to do a lot research before hand to know where to look. Mine asked for the release the last week of spring ball but she already knew where she was going and what the deal was going to be. In fact she had submitted applications months before and was already accepted into the school before she tipped her hand. She didn't get a deal anywhere near what she got from the first school but she is much more content about the school and playing situation.

Don't hold your breath on this one. You'll get even less help the second time, if you got any at all the first time.

I don't think anyone would plan to do something last minute - one of those straw and camel's backs things led to it. Obviously the first stop was some of the programs she had considered forst time through.

Part of my point was that the money might not have been there earlier but was when she went looking. In turn her former school likely was able to use her scholarship money for someone else who came along even later.

We ran across the same type of thing but when you dug a little deeper usually there were issues. The thing she wanted to avoid was another bad scene or going into a situation as a stop gap player.

What happened to the Rivers player that went to High Point. She's not on the roster this year. Is she still at HP or did she transfer?

Heard she suffered what appears to be a career ending injury. Complications from a torn hamstring.
