Is this the only state where parents assume they know more than a coach? No wonder we can't figure out how to develop players.

Does this happen with other professionals who interact with these parents and their children? Do these parents question doctors who are treating their children? What about their school teachers? Piano or musuc instructors? Or is this just a youth soccer thing?

Our little back and forth started because you (implicitly) agreed with a poster negatively critiquing a player, and you went off about "proper training." You later comfirmed you did have a personal impression of the kid and were "horrified" about a legit D1 offer to such a player. Sounds like YOU were the one criticizing and questioning the coaches (since the kid in question accessed many of the best coaches in the state over the years). I never said a word about coaching, but I did challenge you to produce the goods since you claimed to know what real "proper training" is all about.

Oh who cares. So some jerk is being a jerk. A PG year is a great option for an athlete. I've seen many PG's at my sons school go on to far better schools than they would have without that extra year. They got great grades, were the stars of their teams, got better school and their coaches interested in them, and went off to colleges they had no chance of getting into the year before. Great choice. Good luck!!

that's funny because i know a lot of pg's that don't get into schools much better than they would have. if a school isn't that interested in you to begin with, another year isn't going to make you star recruit all of a sudden. if you are a talented player that already had offers but your grades needed to be improved then a pg yr makes sense.

It's a good choice for anyone who is willing to pursue each and every last possible avenue to make the dream come true, a dream that even if it does come true will have a short lifespan. Data on outcomes (soccer and otherwise) on PG kids vs non-PG kids would be interesting to look at.

If you can afford 40K for a fifith year of HS, good luck. IMO the ROI is definitely not worth it, for a kid who is getting accepted into schools this year as a senior. Again, it seems that the focus is on the wrong target, athletics instead of academics.

Wrong. If athletics is the focus (size -- hockey anyone?) you get into college, get a deferment, and play in the amateur leagues for a year or two before entering. The PG year is all about academics, but if you are an athlete, there is scholarship money available. So these schools shop around for good athletes with mediocre grades, offer them money to be the star of their team for a year (you can't PG at the HS you graduated from) and a year later, with their grades up, they get into a better colleges, regardless of the division or the sport played. You haven't had experience in this area or you would know this. So why are you putting it down?

Agreed it's a decision that may not be for all families. However, it was an opinion about the pros/cons of a PG year, when a student is already being accepted into colleges as a 2011 graduate.
