Russia has upgraded every aspect of its military in the last decade and is now becoming Europe’s greatest security threat, a top U.S. Marine Corps general told NATO officials.

Marine Corps General Joe Dunford spoke during a visit to NATO headquarters in Belgium, where he is meeting the alliance’s Military Committee on Wednesday, the Department of Defense announced. Russia’s decision to send heavy military reinforcement in support of breakaway regions in northern Georgia in 2008 marked the beginning of a new wave of mistrust between Moscow and the western alliance, culminating in 2014 with the start of the conflict in Ukraine.

WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary James Mattis said the united effort of NATO nations in combating terrorism is critical to defeating it now and ensuring it stays defeated.

“We will be unrelenting in our effort, working with like-minded nations. We will target ISIS around the world, for this remains a global fight,” Mattis said at the conclusion of a summit of NATO defense ministers. “We will continue to carry out operations necessary to crush the physical caliphate and prevent a resurgence of ISIS.”

Why do you love ISIS and Russia?
Why do you hate our troops?
The troops could be home with their families, saving American taxpayers billions .

Moscow spent 3.9 trillion rubles ($61 billion) on defense in 2017, a 17% decline from the previous year and the first annual drop since 1998, according to new data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

The decline in spending is a sharp reversal from recent years, when Russia ramped up investment as part of an effort to update outdated military systems by 2025.

European officials are hoping to emphasize Western unity at the NATO summit July 11 and 12. But Trump remains displeased that many NATO countries fail to spend at least 2 percent of their gross domestic product on defense, a target alliance members agreed to reach by 2024. The United States spends about 3.58 percent of its GDP on defense.

And by my calculation, and this was a very conservative estimate, we’re spending around $100 to $150 billion, billion with a b, every year maintaining troops and bases overseas. And I used the pentagon’s congressionally-mandated methodology in my calculations. And this more money than any government agency except the Pentagon itself.

And we have these 800 base sites outside the U.S. in some 80 countries. And that’s actually more countries than the Untied States had bases in at the end of the Cold War. The total number of bases has shrunk by about half since the end of the Cold War, but the scale, the scope of these bases, the spread of these bases has expanded, basically doubled, from about 40 to about 80 countries.

We have hundreds of thousands of troops at this point on these bases, most concentrated in places where they’ve been concentrated since the end of World War II – Germany, Japan, Italy, and then South Korea, where they’ve been since the end of the Korean War.

I wonder why the Dems don't just send a check to the MSM every month.

And you have yet to address some of the reasons NATO was created. I will help you.
Remember the time just after Japan , Rome and Berlin ravaged the planet ? Do you remember the Soviet Union ? None of those present a danger today. There isn't much going on in Europe that requires us having 35,000 troops in Germany, is there? How about the 12,000 in Italy ?
Ask Ukraine or Belarus or the Baltics if they don't think there's a threat in Europe right now.

"Mission Accomplished"? That worked so well before.

Shouldn't Europe work on solving their own problems ?

47.000 troops in Germany and Italy combined . Why ?

General Joseph F. Dunford, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, addressed a crowd at the Brookings Institute last week, in which he discussed the challenges faced by the American military and how best to face them in the coming years.

According to Dunford, Russia poses an “existential threat” to the United States, as they have worked to modernize their abilities to use all of their available assets, including information gathering, cyber-attacks, diplomacy, and military action to accomplish their strategic goals.
Russia has made multiple highly aggressive moves in Europe over the last several years - close fly bys with jet fighters (including ours) in international waters, invading national air spaces in Europe, interfered with carge vessels in international waters. They invaded Ukraine, took part of it and are still in Eastern Ukraine fighting (over 10,000 Ukrainians have died since 2014). They've interfered in the elections of multiple democracies. They have a leader that has not qualms about troops dying (and covering it up through its tightly controlled state media). Then there's the tiny issue of nuclear weapons...Anyone who doesn't think they are a threat to any nation is an utter fool (and probable Fox viewer).

Because it's in our best interests to help our allies should they need it.

The 80's called and they want their foreign policy back.

And, vice versa? Because I don't see a lot coming back this way. Shouldn't we be looking to help ourselves, first, before we go helping "allies" who may or may not return the favor when needed?

Much of that happens all over the world, and never gets any airplay. How about the pirates off the coast in Somalia ? How about what goes on in Africa under the nose of the UN ?

Russia's economy is smaller than some US States. No one is saying Russia isn't a threat. But how much should the US taxpayer be spending on troops and bases in Europe ? If you are worried about Russian nukes, tens of thousands of troops aren't relative to that.

China is cleaning our clock. But Russia, Russia ,. Russia ?

Ask the generals in the pentagon.
Maybe they feel it's necessary to contain Russia.

Maybe you should explain to them how Russia is not a threat.

I think they need to tell them to cut it out.

Send letters to Dunford and Mattis. They clearly need to get the message that Russia is our friend, NATO is obsolete and we can't trust our generals.

Don't worry. Putin will be telling Trump exactly that when they meet soon, with no staff or note takers, just two interpreters.
