From the minute Obama was elected the GOP made it their mission to make sure he failed* He only had control for two years. The House switched in 2010 (sworn in Jan 2011). The Senate fully flipped in 2014. But even in the first two years Obama really only had a max of 59 Dem senators, not 60 (various departures, illnesses changed the numbers). With the 60 vote requirement for many bills almost anything became impossible (see Merrick Garland appointment), even more so after 2014. Obama knew he had to leap on healthcare during the very brief time it had any chance of passing. At the time of the ACA vote he only 58 Dems but he got to 60 in the Senate with two Independents.

As for ACA? It offers a way for millions of self employed and small business owners to get coverage (**see how many people fit that definition). It also means millions who couldn't get insurance because of pre existing conditions can get insurance now. Prior to ACA the truly poor had access to care via Medicaid and programs like CHIP. Part of ACA expanded Medicaid coverage but the rest was for all those others. ACA also improved employer based plans like guaranteed coverage for certain conditions, better mental health care coverage etc. Once boneheads figured out what ACA meant to their own plans it became much more popular and people realized they didn't want it to go away.

Many of the nation's working poor work multiple part time jobs because a convenient way for businesses to save money is to cut hours so they don't have to offer benefits. Hopefully with the improved job market more workers can gain fulltime employment and benefits

*Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, in an astoundingly telling moment halfway through President Obama's first term, told a reporter what had been the guiding strategy of Republicans in Congress. "The single most important thing we want to achieve," McConnell said, "is for President Obama to be a one-term president.".

**Self-employed Americans and the workers they hired accounted for 44 million jobs in 2014, or 30% of the national workforce

As is the case with every opposition party. No different than today. I guess I should be happy the opposition is more and more open about it. Mitch was the first to say it, and Dems today have taken it to a whole 'nother level.

The GOP is party over country even more so than ever. They cow tow to Trump all the time. Spending and debt is out of control because of tax and budget policies. If they cared about the nation's fiscal health they would be reigning him in, not letting him spend like a drunker sailor.

That is very naive to think it's a GOP issue. The divide today is incomprehensible to me.

You know that this January had a record (all time high) amount of tax revenue because of tax cuts and that is expected to continue for much of this year.

How exactly is he spending like a drunk sailor?

The NRA and the gun manufacture and sales industry is driving this bus. I am sure it is full of hard working people. So was the tobacco industry.

At some point it becomes very very clear that the interests of the industry and the interests of my children and your children do not align.

Yes it's still high because of the OLD tax code. New tax code raises the deficit by an estimated $1.4T - that's TRILLION. His proposed budget would $7.2T over ten years. Even if Congress cuts that in half (doubtful that happens) that's still nearly $4T more on top of the $1.4T giveaway to the rich and corporations. He's not just a drunk sailor - he's gone nuclear on the nation's fiscal health and the GOP stands idly by and allows him to.

the NRA does the bidding of gun and ammo manufacturers. They spend million and millions at the national and state level on contributions and lobbyists. They go very dirty on politicians wanting to pass any kind of legislation, even Republicans. The NRA members do not represent gun owners as a whole (only 34% own any guns and of those 19% are NRA members http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank...d-experiences/ ), yet even many members still favor some forms of legislation (http://www.politifact.com/wisconsin/...ks-all-gun-pu/)

GREENWICH — It’s not the White House china, but at $33,400 a plate, Hillary Clinton is about to feast off the elite Connecticut donors of President Barack Obama.

The Democratic presidential nominee will scoop up hundreds of thousands of dollars for her campaign war chest during an Aug. 15 fundraising dinner at a Greenwich estate that has twice hosted Obama, Hearst Connecticut Media has learned.

Oh, and the $14.4 million gated compound has access to a polo field, which Obama used two years ago to land his Marine One helicopter.

The starting price of admission for dinner with the former secretary of state and one-time first lady is $33,400-per-plate, multiple people involved in the event told Hearst.

The money will go to the Hillary Victory Fund, a joint-venture between Clinton’s campaign, the Democratic National Committee and 32 state parties.

Florida is insane. Are there more McDonalds or are there more gun stores? You drive around there and it feels like every other car probably has an assault rifle in the trunk.

The People of Bridgeport were not happy about this.

"In a city known more for its high poverty rate than fundraising largess", former President Bill Clinton made a foray into Bridgeport on Tuesday to help Hillary Clinton pad her massive campaign bank account.

Clinton spent two hours mingling with wealthy contributors to his wife’s presidential bid at the $4 million Black Rock home of Nigerian-born software executive Oni Chukwu.

Not once did the 42nd president bring up Donald Trump, who has publicly assailed Clinton for his previous marital infidelity.

“He never mentioned that name,” said one attendee, who asked not to be identified because the reception was closed to the media.

Clinton instead touted the resume of the former secretary of state and former U.S. senator, portraying her as a problem-solver who has sacrificed personal gain to help others.

“The crowd, they were, like, mesmerized,” the person said. “He is the natural cheerleader.”

Many allies of the Clintons in the state missed the reception to attend the final State of the Union address of President Barack Obama, including Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, who was invited to sit with first lady Michelle Obama.

Organizers declined to release fundraising totals for the event, which drew about 50 people, including Bridgeport Mayor Joseph Ganim.
But Bill Clinton’s return to Connecticut — where he and Hillary met as Yale Law students — drew the scorn of Republicans and criticism from some Democrats over its $1,000-minimum price tag.

“I think it’s very fitting that a Democrat would have a fundraiser there, a city that’s been abused by their policies, a city whose taxpayers have been crippled,” said Jack Fowler, publisher of the conservative magazine National Review, and a Milford resident.

A faction of liberal Democrats and Working Families Party members loyal to Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, a Clinton rival, staged its own rally Tuesday in Bridgeport to protest the lavish fundraiser. An advisory for the event listed the Greater Bridgeport NAACP as a sponsor, which the group’s president George Mintz said was erroneous.

“Oh my God, no,” Mintz said, adding the group would never take sides in Clinton versus Sanders.

The group was only participating to try to get more people involved in the NAACP, Mintz said.
