as far as data mining goes ,on its face its legal, where your argument runs into problems is how and by whom it was done
#1 is the conspiracy - this was directed by a political campaign to infiltrate servers to find an "inference"- so the data that was collected was manipulated
that manipulated data was then given to Federal govt agencies (akin to filing a false police report, also could involve mail or wire fraud depending on how the info was delivered)
#2 Access- the Clintons hired a tech company ,who in turn hired researchers from Georgia tech (they already had a government contract with the Pentagon for an unrelated project)
they used their access to govt servers on this little side project (which is a definite NONO). this is where the Espionage Act comes into play- they used access which they werent entitled to ,to gain informant that they werent entitled to and distributed that info to parties that werent entitled to the information
thats called spying
the fact that they accessed the Office of the President of the United States just adds to the severity of the breach of security
the fact that they did this to an elected POTUS means that the goal was to destabilize the duly elected Government and by definition is a grave threat to our Democracy

every print media has "some " quality- the NY Times used to have almost all quality (thats dropped considerably in the last 20 years)

i think thats the point- shouldnt any print media have at worst "MOSTLY ALL" quality investigative journalism? of course cons laugh at most of this -the last 20 years has shown that most of what is printed is narrative based spin not journalism
the last 5 years has proven that they will print absolute falsehoods to fit the narrative
