El Paso leaders and law enforcement officials reacted with fury to Trump’s comments about the city’s border fence.

"It is sad to hear President Trump state falsehoods about El Paso, Texas, in an attempt to justify the building of a 2,000-mile wall,” El Paso Sheriff Richard Wiles said after Trump’s speech Tuesday night. “El Paso was a safe city long before a wall was built. President Trump continues to give a false narrative."

El Paso Mayor Dee Margo, a Republican, reacted similarly and posted on Twitter that the city had never been one of the United States’ most dangerous.

“El Paso was never one of the most dangerous cities in the US. We‘ve had a fence for 10 years and it has impacted illegal immigration and curbed criminal activity. It is not the sole deterrent. Law enforcement in our community continues to keep us safe,” he wrote. https://news.vice.com/en_us/article/...says-hes-wrong

Meanwhile the governor of New Mexico is pulling away National Guard troops from the border and sending them for humanitarian work, saying there is no "crisis"

Reuters) - New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has ordered most of the National Guard troops deployed at the state’s border with Mexico to withdraw, rejecting U.S. President Donald Trump’s contention there was a border crisis. Most of the 118 National Guard troops deployed in the state will be withdrawn, Lujan Grisham, a Democrat, said in a statement late Tuesday. She called Trump’s frequent declarations of an immigration crisis at the border a “charade.”

The troops had been deployed by her Republican predecessor, Susana Martinez, last year at the request of Trump, also a Republican. A small, though unspecified, number of troops will remain in place to help with the “humanitarian needs” of communities near the border and vulnerable migrants arriving at the border, Lujan Grisham said.

Of course the republican mayor wants to tone down any claims that El Paso was crime ridden.

    Thanks for sharing the obvious.

He's only been Mayor since 2017. He has no vested interest in trying to prove things weren't that bad before. Then there's those pesky FACTS another poster provided along with multiple other analyses showing crime is lower among border towns, because of law enforcement not walls. Boots on the ground.

The right loves to hold up San Diego as another hotbed of crime.

A report last week by New York University’s Brennan Center for Justice found that San Diego had both the lowest murder rate and overall violent crime rate of the 30 largest American cities in 2018. San Diego is poised to end 2018 with 1.9 murders per 100,000 residents, compared to 23.1 per 100,000 in Indianapolis and 51.7 per 100,000 in Baltimore. That means a resident of Indianapolis is 12 times more likely to be murdered, a resident of Baltimore 27 times.

If the border crisis is real, wouldn’t the crime rate in San Diego reflect that? If illegal immigration is the existential threat that President Trump and conservative Republicans say it is, wouldn’t there be evidence in San Diego? Wouldn’t MS-13 gang members and drug traffickers be shooting people in downtown San Diego? Slashing hard working citizens in San Ysidro? Terrorizing the streets of La Jolla?https://timesofsandiego.com/opinion/...diego-so-safe/

At least #3 was pre-emptive and owned up to it. There will be many more to follow. Question now becomes is there some date after which blackface is not acceptable but before that it was? I mean, my old man did it in college in the 50s, clearly dressed like Al Jolsen. Good thing that at his age he isn't running for more than president of his condo board.

Cons should be worried. There's plenty of them out there with similar pics they'd like tp burn if they can. A right wing web site started the black face battle. They may regret it

I’m happy Dems are exposing their own even though it’s embarrassing the party it’s good to clean house and its the right part of the country to clean out the Racist behavior, something thing tells me these guys were never true Democrats to begin with, probably got elected because they weren’t hard core conservatives.

Pretty sure I pointed out that it was fairly common in the 1980s, but some in this forum said that it absolutely was not and these people should be hung at high noon regardless.

Hey, if the Dems want to crucify their own, have at it. You can hang Lizzy Warren while you are at it for cultural appropriation. I actually think her crime more serious than what these men did 30 or 40 years ago at Halloween parties/dance contests or whatever.

Trump agrees with you and stated so last night. See the boarder wall works:

San Diego built multiple layers of walls in the late eighties. Between 1989 and 1990, apprehensions of undocumented immigrants at the border in the San Diego sector increased, from about 367,000 to 473,000, according to the Border Patrol. That was consistent with a rise in apprehensions across the southern border.

A second layer of fencing made of steel mesh, 13 miles long and 15 feet to 18 feet high, was finished in 1996. Apprehensions of undocumented immigrants in the San Diego sector decreased sharply between 1996 and 1997, from about 484,000 to 284,000. That 40 percent decrease was not consistent with numbers in other border sectors that year.

She will get her comeuppance for that and so will they for their serious mistakes. Most folks did not do that 30 or 40 years ago. Lets go with some of those.

That's a falsehood. We like to point out that crime dropped by 90% once the wall went up.

Former Obama Border Patrol Chief, Mark Morgan: "The wall works. It's not needed everywhere, but it is needed in strategic locations along the southwest border. And what do we mean by the wall? The border security experts will tell you that the wall in and of itself is not the solution. The wall is a critical element as part of a multilayer strategy of infrastructure, technology, and personnel. So yes, as part of that multilayer approach, the wall absolutely works and there's historical data that can prove that. You can go to San Diego, Nogales, El Paso, anywhere where that multilayered approach has been used, where the wall is part of that, and illegal immigration has drastically reduced by around 90%, and overall crime in those areas has drastically reduced as well. It's not hyperbole; it’s not driven by political ideology. That's fact, and data can show that....If somebody says that the wall is ineffective as part of that multilayer approach, they're misinformed and they're misleading the American people. When somebody says, "It's not effective," the only conclusion I can come to is that it’s being driven by their personal political ideology because fact, historical data, and expert opinion clearly show that nothing else makes sense."

Funny how Mark Morgan, Obama-era border patrol chief says we need a wall, isn't it? Even after Trump fired him, you'd might think he'd want revenge by not supporting the wall.
