Schools are at their limits...lack of a budget lack of staff and lack of students. They have zero help. Teachers do not under any circumstances want to extend their year by a week or to. They won't have it and it won't be as easy as some think to simply extend the year by a week or 2

Seems like most are either doing a delay start or a one day delay. Doesn't mean it won't change but administrators and most teachers want kids back in school. Enough of the disruptions, it's detrimental to learning and their emotional well being.

Yes it has an R factor of 3 - each infected person can spawn 3 new cases. Flu's R value averages 1.5 - 2.

And yes the vaccines are preventing deaths and serious illnesses, which is fantastic. Problem is with tens of millions still unvaccinated those people are straining the Healthcare system. Some states have terrible vaccination rates.

It’s not an either or thing. That’s what you don’t seem to understand. If your cousin can be proven via testing to have had COVID then he/she is counted as a case. Any comorbidity, disease, condition, or acute ailment they may have doesn’t nullify that they are a case regardless of what state they live in. I think FL may have in 2020 tried to play games with their numbers, but unless the provider doesn’t want to get paid for their diagnosis and risk loosing their malpractice coverage or licensure they have to provide full and complete reporting. Remember when people die, questions are asked about their circumstances and health issues. Keeping two sets of books is a recipe for disaster unless your a mobster. There are too many people involved for something to go unnoticed.

This is all true, however, when you compare mortality of Omicron to Flu, keep in mind that the historical stats for the Flu were not as described above. If someone died from a condition that was exacerbated by the flu, it was that condition that was put on their death certificate, NOT the Flu. The Flu was not mentioned anywhere on that certificate and not counted anywhere in any stat. I know this first hand from a parent's death in late 2019. Take away these related causes for Omicron, and what does the death rate look like? how does it compare to historical flu numbers? For viruses, a mutation that does not kill the host efficiently is rewarded.

Some viruses start off with a bang - more severe but less transmissible - then move to less severe but more transmissible. That's what Omicron seems to be following. However, viruses will be viruses and keep on mutating. Another new strain could become more lethal (the 1918-19 pandemic did that round 2). CV isn't going away, it's a question of what's its next shape shifter form and how do we manage things moving forward.
