It is the exact opposite. It is the inadequacy of the OW coach to do their job correctly. They are getting paid to develop and choose not to for certain kids. It is 100% the coaches fault. At older ages it is a different situation.

You hire a tutor and they think you are dumb so they take your money, ignore you at the tutoring session and just help the customers they think are smart.
When you complain they make the comment that its just like your dumb parents that are bad at their job and their boss ignores them for other workers. To you this makes total sense because you are stupid but everyone else is left going, what?

And what makes them the "chosen few"?
Do you know the criteria the coach uses to put a kid in this group?
Having a chosen few is not an issue, since it normally reflects which players the coach trusts. What creates that trust? What matters is the criteria needed to be in the "chosen few". If it is about commitment, work ethic, intensity, individual focus on improvement and similar attributes, then it seems a deserved place to be for those earning the distinction.
Are you implying it's for other reasons?

No I don't know the criteria and that is the big issue. OW coaches talk a good game and tell the kids it is for work ethic, attitude, intensity etc., but they are full of ****. And the kids are not stupid, they know it.
The OW coaches routinely contradict themselves. Their chosen ones are the middle of the pack when it comes to work ethic, intensity, showing up for practice and having a positive attitude. They can get away with it and they know it so they do.
If you think it is anything else then your head is in the sand and you do not see what is really going on there. The chosen few should be held to a higher standard but they are held to a lower one. And that is the shame of it.

Every coach has chosen players and each have a criteria for it. If you are not a “chosen one” with your coach, nothing you do will change that. Wait out a coaching change or change clubs.
We would love to believe that hard work, showing up, playing well, etc. can change this but it can’t.
