Heard that too. That would be incredible for the kids that are trapped in the 75 mile radius!

I’d encourage you to watch a couple isl and nepsac games. A few very strong talents, mainly international depending on the school, and then the rest of the silver spoon pack. The ex Revs and current DA players standout not necessarily from their ability but by the crazy screaming muttering parents on the sideline. Trust me. It brings the whole experience down vs elevating

          ISL soccer isn’t that impressive.

Honestly, the move away from here is worth it if you have even the slightest chance to go pro.

Ok that has nothing to do with the territory/owning player's rights issues....Yes the Revs rarely have a pro potential players. Most of the kids departing for ISL know they aren't going pro but have determined they can get a educational and even a soccer edge with college recruiting playing prep vs staying with the Revs. But for the few that could maybe be a pro player someday? The Revs have a very poor HG track record. They have a terrible development track record, period. If pro potential players had more options on where they could play it would be a game changer - even more so if more pro clubs start residency programs. The nation's top youth players would flock to the top clubs; lesser clubs like the Revs would struggle to get scrubs.

It isn't that simple. Sending a kid off to a residential program is one thing. A few pro clubs have started them, but no all kids will handle being far away from their families well. There's the question of what kind of education you're getting as well. But if more clubs had them and the school questions are adequately addressed that could greatly change the landscape. Maybe only do it for kids 16+.

To move an entire family for one kid "maybe" being a pro player one day? Not many families can do that because of work and other reasons, and not many will want to uproot sibling sand change everything for one kid's "maybe"

Most kids with a real drive and the mentality to actually become pro would not have a problem leaving home for a residential academy at 13/14 years old. More likely it's those parents that are living vicariously through their kid who would have the problem, since they would no longer be able to watch every practice and game (to the player's relief). Getting rid of the homegrown territory would help everybody. Players would have a choice and poorly run academies would have to step up their game or get out of the business of youth player development.

the system is a complete racket. No club should own a kid for more than one or two years, and they should have the freedom to chose what pro club they want to go to. the Revs are a prime example of a broken system. Kids shouldn't be hog tied to such a crap club.

MLS clubs can register a player as HG before he leaves for college and then they own rights to sign the player without exposing him to the draft (apparently forever). The contract won't count against the cap (though lol how the club makes it seem like a benefit for the player below).

It's a racket for sure - all US sports leagues are socialist in nature to keep the billionaire owners from spending the teams/league into bankruptcy (see NASL 1.0, USFL etc).

"Players in the New York Red Bulls Academy will be added to the MLS home grown talent identification list.

Players who are on the list will benefit from the opportunity to be signed directly by the New York Red Bulls First Team, as opposed to entering the MLS Draft where they could be selected by any MLS team. Set in place by the MLS in 2006, the rule is designed to provide increased opportunities for local players. In order to be eligible, players must abide by the following guidelines

All players must reside in a team's "Home Territory" for at least one year prior to being added to the team's Home grown Player List.
Players must be added to an MLS team's Home grown Player List prior to entering a four-year college, but can maintain their Home grown Player status during college if registered before entering that institution.
Members of the U17, U20, and U23 U.S. National Teams cannot be added to an MLS team's Home grown Player List, but a player already on a Home grown Player List can maintain that status if selected for a US National team at a later date.
The Red Bulls can sign up to two players each year from its homegrown talent list to either senior or developmental contracts."

Easy solution then. Just make sure you play for the U17 NT before joining the Revs Academy and you're in the clear.

The text from the NYRB site is at least a few years old. There is no limit to the number of players that can be signed by a club to a homegrown contract each year.
