Not as bitter as we are about the TA just going away and making us return to the local clubs.

So- In summary-

The Timbers Discovery Program was originally set up to identify local players that were ready to compete at a higher level. The intention was to have an 08 academy team. Players from RTC and ODP had a leg up as they were "knowns"- at the end of 2019 some Timbers associated players were asked to try out- these were the first round kids.. and some were asked to come to the second round.

Players on non- Timbers associated teams were invited to phase two- There were around 45ish kids. They ended up having several try out sessions at the Timbers field in Beaverton.

In the third round there was about 28ish kids invited and this session was not completed because of COVID.

Because of financial harm and maybe historical issues US Soccer bowed out of the development academy business. The MLS then immediately stepped in and over the course of a few months put some practices in place. In particular- they invited most DA clubs back in and set up age groups for this new league.

MLS set minimum requirements for MLS teams and some teams chose to have more than the minimum and others decided to only put into it what is required. The Timbers fall into this category. The TA is known for not having good teams (look at their records) and their lack of commitment shows poorly upon them.

The plan moving forward is to have two practices a week. No competitions. No uniforms. No practicing at Timbers facilities.

Stay with your club teams people. Support them, let your kids hang out with the kids and enjoy the game. The Timbers have nothing to offer us. If you look at how they did the 07's you have all the answers you need.

Decent run down except for the part where you infer it’s not worth it to be around the TA even though you didn’t have actual experience in it.

Those of us that have actually had kids in the program don’t regret it one bit. My 07 even though the team got hosed wouldn’t have changed the last year one bit. He had been playing up in 06 da before and the competition was stronger all year day in and day out with the TA 07s. That’s facts, not guesses or hate. He says he’s bummed they don’t get to compete as a team but he most certainly would not to have changed it. He will play club this year and be back to TA next year for the u15. It’s not that hard folks

You are dreaming if you think any of our locals are going be top shelf selections for placement in 2 years on a legitimate u15 MLS youth side.

Welcome to the appropriate new normal in a couple of years when the former/long forgotten discovery attendees will be playing full time with a local club or being cannon fodder (practice players) in the new mls era youth academy (if it even happens in Portland).

What your kid was playing in last year with the 07's isn't even on par to the recent era when our local club scene had national level youth club teams (pre DA). Sorry they never got the chance to play at that level, maybe it will return over the next few years and you will better understand the difference.

Sure, except for the fact you don’t know who I am, and therefore where my son has played or what experience he has.

To convince yourself there wasn’t the highest concentration of top level kids of the 07 age group on the TA is a disservice to yourself not me. That doesn’t say there weren’t good kids not on that team, I know there are, but no club team has that overall level of players across the 19 kid roster.

But you don’t know this because you weren’t a part of it.

Westside. There is a decent cohort of the 07TA team who are going to play at Westside Timbers. I'm not sure why that would be a secret. Plus, certain Eastern European brothers haven't played at that club yet, so it is only logical that they would cycle through that program next. I don't actually know that last part to be true, but I like how it sounds.

Why wouldn't these kids go to Vantucky and play in BECNL? That would seem like the logical choice.

Because Oregon boys traveling to play Washington teams during Covid is stupid and because Marc Evans is a fantastic coach.

It was a good run down. The naysayers are missing the point where this training is being offered free of charge. Only a time commitment and the fact they get to play with next level kids is great. OYSA premier gold is OK.... But from what I saw these kids were basically an all star team... we had these back in the day... ;-) and it was fun for my son to play with them.

We will be participating- and if he ends up not making the U15's so be it.... This is still a cool experience.

ODP is a sinful example of extorting parents of their monies in the pay to play model gone haywire in Oregon. ODP is no longer ALL-STARS, it's ALL-COMERS that can pay to play, much like THUSC/FC PDX Girls travel only league. It's a joke.

How many other coaches in town have a USYS national championship trophy? Both of the Evans's (son Steven, who was the WT 07 coach last year and is now at WashT, and dad Marc, still at Westside) are excellent coaches.

Coincidence of having a kid on said team and assisting the actual head coach is hardly a case for being excellent coach.By that measure ,18 other dads on that team were also excellent.

I enjoy your effort and narrative it's truly an angle that has little substance or relevance. But does provide a chuckle.

Maybe he can join those other Oregonians that have won it won it as a head coach in the near future.
