I worry about the league folding leaving this player with no where to play.
If she's as good as advertised she can land in Europe eventually. I worry more about the false hopes she's giving to other players, who will forgo college only to find the pros aren't interested. That's apparently already happened with at least one Thorns player.
Enough with the concern trolling about Olivia Moultrie.
Even if she were to blow out her knee tomorrow and never play soccer again at a high level, she's already made more from her Nike contract than she would as a D1 athlete at a major public university.
$300k. If one goes to North Carolina for four years and pays out-of-state tuition every year, that's $200k; she's already done herself better than what Anson Dorrance was going to give her. And AD isn't stupid, which is why he's not too upset that Moultrie decommitted from UNC and went pro; he knows she's taken a FAR better deal. If soccer doesn't work out, the girl can pay her tuition with cash, and that's WITHOUT tapping into her parents' wealth.
Anson is happy because now he can give that full ride to a player who is better on the pitch vs has more insta followers.
It was a verbal; Anson could have rescinded it any any time should he have decided that OM, approaching HS graduation, was no longer capable of playing soccer at a high level.

Assuming her parents don't spend her money. She won't make much as a pro female player and her uniqueness (a young so called pro player) will be gone. UNC is very hard to get into from out of state - they have a state law requiring they take 70% from instate. That's what being a good player can bring you - admittance to better schools than you can get into without sports. If she's playing all the time, is she keeping her home-schooled grades up?

They still have so-called "Jackie Coogan laws" on the books, which prevent parents from profiting off of famous children. I believe California's Coogan law includes athletes as well as actors.
Of course, who says OM would go to UNC if not for soccer? If your purpose for attending college is to be the best collegiate player you can, then UNC is a dream opportunity. If your purpose is academics--UNC is a fine school, but there are many better options, especially if you can get in-state tuition in California.

It sounds like they did a permanent move to Oregon so not sure if the Coogan law would apply to them? I’m not sure why they chose to go with Thorns. Is there a possibility the family is paying Thorns to allow their daughter to be semi-part of the team? Sounds like they have plenty of money.

They couldn't talk anyone else in SoCal to give her the same kind of deal she got here.
As for the Coogan law it has more loopholes than the DA no high school requirement :)

I heard the parents are loaded from some pyramid sales thing and don’t care about education. They only care about soccer media attention, not really even soccer itself. No one leaves the Socal DA program to play on the Portland Thorns Academy u17, very bottom of weak league team if they care about soccer development. The little rich girl never needs college or a job. The parents can afford the media blitz and can easily afford to support her down the line. It’s their money so shouldn’t they be allowed to do whatever they want with it? This is America after all.

It is up to them and you just hope the parents are doing what is best for OM. OM may never need college, but she may want college.
