These funds subsidize the Academy players. Thus, whether your kid plays rec, club, ODP, ECNL, etc, you are paying for both the boys and girls Academy programs. The DA is still a pay-to-play model - you just have the backing of every youth soccer player in the state.
I posted a similar comment tonight and then just saw that this was posted yesterday. I missed seeing this but I don't think it would have sunk in until I started hearing tonight just how much OYSA gets. I thought they got quite a bit more, but apparently not.

I don't think the average club or Oregon player knows just how much of their fees goes to the academies. I think most think OYSA is not for profit and I think most think the majority of money goes to them. Learn something new every day I guess! But my personal opinion is how dare they advertise free travel and not recognize everyone in Oregon funding it? Kind of rude if you ask me.

They've been doing it for the boys already for years.

I learned this tonight. In the over 10 years of aoregon youth soccer I have been around, I had no idea Oregon families were footing this bill.

Well, you are going to be shocked then to find out what is done with your Federal and State taxes. It will blow your mind!

It will be fun. Driving vans is economical and cost smart. It's a for profit business and every dollar you can save is important profit.

The point is to make money. Van is cheaper than flying. Coaches can drive.

Just heard where? What are you quoting? That wasn't in the information pamphlet. Thorns will have same transportation options as boys academy players ( air, bus, van).

They took a bus to Canada this weekend. So that tells you how far they will go in a bus instead of flying.

Are you sure? They already have their 99/00 and 01/02 teams all set and took them to Canada. Haven't heard of any current Thorns Academy players that are worried they won't make the GDA team. Assurances were likely given.

03 and 04/05 teams are new though.

That's odd.. since the league just formed and no games for this league have commenced.

Not odd at all. Thorns Academy is simply being renamed Thorns GDA. Cross check this year's Thorns Academy rosters with next year's Thorns GDA roster and it will become crystal clear.

I don't know. I think players 12-26 on those rosters may be in for a surprise if the ECNL players believe the hype and decide to play for free on GDA. Which is really lovely karma if you think about it.
