All the obnoxious FC parents went to updx, I thought.

(Or TA, where we fortunately never hear from them again)

Relax. The man has other functions and obligations in life besides posting recaps on an anonymous soccer forum. And, let's be honest here....Westside lost to a good team. It happens, even if AH was playing either team is capable of winning. Sounds like the same thing with UPDX and OPFC. I would like a recap on that game.

            Your two-for-one Westside recap

            First, vs ADF on Saturday.

As mentioned previously, AH was suspended for this one due to a red card received last week vs Capitol. As it was for a second booking, he was only out one game. Unfortunately, it was against one of the most dangerous offensive teams in OYSA. To the tape we go.

ADF showed just how dangerous they were, scoring a few minutes in off of a cornerkick. However, after that the game would settle down; with ADF generally controlling possession and Westside attacking on the counter. To compensate for the loss of a player who can run down pretty much any forward out there, Westside moved two of their fastest offensive players into the fullback slots (sliding one of the fullbacks over to centerback). This generally kept ADF at bay, but it made Westside less dangerous up top. With about five minutes left, one one of these fullbacks (HDN) equalized, smashing home a volley from the top of the box. At half it was 1-1.

Game continued in much the same fashion in the second half, until ADF got two quick goals. One came off a well-taken free kick that just went under the bar and through the keeper's fingertips, the second came on a quick counter. Westside appeared to get one back later in the half when JJ blasted in a through-ball, but the linesman's flag was up. Both teams had a few other chances, but nobody scored further; final was 3-1 to ADF.

In general, the Westside defense did well despite being short a key player, all three goals were on somewhat flukey plays, which is to take nothing away from ADF, who deserved the victory. Not having much speed up top certainly changed the tenor of the game compared to the Clash at the Border final, when WT shredded the ADF defense with their press; in this one ADF was able to set up in the back line without much difficulty. And a bit of snarky advice, in case anyone is reading--if a team is to keep its shape, it needs to keep IN shape. That's all I'm gonna say 'bout that.

This morning, WT visited Liberty HS to play FC Portland, which is ALWAYS a fun match, as many of the boys on both sides are high school classmates of each other. And it looks like FC is starting to get the band back together--TE was back for this one, as was ZA. (RF and Gunder are still with TA, and Grandpa and his camera were nowhere to be seen). And FC has nearly as many player on its roster from U12 Copa (3) as WT does (5), so there's that.

Game started with FC kicking off, working the ball down the field, and coming rather close to scoring, but failing to convert. At this point WT started to impose its will on this one, generally getting the better of the 50-50 balls, and as the half wore on, mounting some dangerous attacks. Nearly halfway through AH opened the scoring when he put a corner past ZA. Teams continued to trade momentum through the first half, which ended with the visitors in red up 1-0.

Early in the second half, Westside doubled their lead when another well-taken corner found the feet of KN, who beat AK with his shot. FC would finally get a goal of their own a few minutes later, when they managed to break Westside's line and BZ blasted one into an open net. But as the half wore on, FC started resorting to more longballs, and WT started dominating possession. The game ended with WT rather cynically milking the clock over the final few minutes--I can't count the number of times FC's done that to us, so I don't feel too sorry about it. :)

Another fine performance by the defense, who (other than the one goal) shut FC down. AP was still his dangerous self, creating lots of chances with his speed and his ability to chip defenders, but Westside kept him from getting any dangerous shots off.

Next weekend, Westside is going to VEGAS BABY for the Mayor's Cup, and a little bird tells me that CFC is heading down there as well. The weekend after that, more OYSA action as we pay a visit to Slytherin House, and then the last round of NWNL games the final weekend of February. (Where those games will be played hasn't been revealed--USYSA is so disorganized--hopefully it's not some place like Spokane or Boise...)

As I have heard many times on here, summer tournament games are not true measures of a team's ability. What with family obligations, vacations, WT playing TA kids...etc. Thanks for the recap and all, but I truly think you would have lost even with AH. Didn't AH play when you lost 0-7 to OPFC? Didn't AH play in most of your losses in the past 12 months? ADF is just flat out good. "You've been......thunder struck."

Are the 05 boys crazier than the 01 girls?

Are the 05’s going to beat the 01’s in posts?

ADF you are so cute- you have been very fortunate so far in terms of scheduling and events you do not have any control or influence over: getting us without our centerback, opfc missing a pk that would have won the game for them and have not played updx. It’s a bit early to be running your mouth don’t you think???

Oh, certainly ADF is a good team! Would have been a tough game even if at full strength. Whether it would have meant two goals, I have no idea. March schedules are now posted, and it looks like there will be a rematch.

As for the OPFC loss... AH played, but in limited minutes; I was surprised he got to play at all, actually. Another defensive starter was also injured--he played, but wasn't at 100%. Last weekend when we beat OPFC, both of them were back to full health.

in red cards. 5/8 of the boy's red cards are from WST. Good job guys

I know opfc was overlooking that game with westside after the 7-0 pasting (family friend of mine said he was worried about his sons teams approach to the game as he felt they were looking towards their Sunday matchup with adf instead of the game against WT.) Does not change anything but here is my visual take on the scenario after seeing all the teams. The talent is now spread so thin and so many teams are very close that depending on even one key kid on any of the top 4 teams (WT, ADF, OPFC, UPDX) having an “good” or “bad” day would influence any said game against the other. These are 14-18 year old kids we are talking about....

                              14-18? I'm pretty certain there aren't any 05s who are 18.

But the rest of your comment is correct.
