Who's talking about the HS team? Just have them play with their birth year club team. There are currently club teams for every year, and there will continue to be club teams for every birth year.

Depending on the state 2/3rd of their birth year club team is in 9th grade and off playing high school and unavailable to play club soccer for a season. The late year 8th graders left behind won't have enough players to field a team on their own.

Yes, but there is still club soccer for the late year 8th graders. It just starts in Dec instead of Sept. Not playing in the fall does not equate to missing a season.

Most of the leagues in this country offer a fall season and a spring season and that's it. Sure, there are some other options out there but they are almost all exclusive to the high end player. For a lot of late year 8th grade players they are going to have to sit idle during the club season that conflicts with High School ball.

They will at the big clubs. Maybe not at the 1-team wonder clubs but it won't be a problem for the top clubs.

If they are "sitting idle" then there is a problem. No reason they can't be on the pitch 3-4 times per week during the HS season, training, conditioning, scrimmaging, whatever. They'll actually improve more than the kids playing HS ball.

And that somehow makes things all better???

It's a fact that 8th graders CAN play HS ball, depending on the school. I know of one 8th grader who led the HS league in scoring last year. Private school K-12.

I love the argument that skipping a season is good for them. Imagine how good everyone will be if we got rid of playing games completely!

I have to disagree with you here, next year's Aug-December 8th grade kids will not have a fall season, whereas the Jan-July 8th graders will be playing in the fall with their club birth year teams and the freshman kids will be playing with their HS teams. IMO it will make those parents/kids (not sure who really) feel like they are not getting the same amount of soccer and will fall behind.

It leaves those Aug-December 8th graders not playing in the Aug-November months. I am sure that their will be a solution to this, just have not seen one yet. Maybe waivers to play with the 8th/7th team in the fall season, or combined teams for a fall season? Who knows, just speculation.

The birth year change will be fine, change is good, just need to work out the details on the kids that it impacts and come up with a solution. Have faith people and stop sweating the small stuff. It will all work out.

It's the fall of 8th grade and the senior year for the fall born kids that is a big deal.

It's the 1000's of kids that love the game, mostly cause they can play with their friends that don't have national team dreams, they just want to play soccer, which helps kept them out of trouble, teaches them tons of good life lessons that this is a big deal for.

It's sad that the 1% gets preference over the rest of the soccer world.
Did you call your child's principle ever summer to make sure she was in a classroom with her friends?
If you did you are a loser.

The person above brings up a great point.

Do your kids quit school when they don't have their friends in their classroom?

Private schools are completely a different matter. They can do whatever they want. In many states/districts 8th graders cannot play HS sports and if it is allowed it almost always JV only. Schools don't want the liability if someone gets injured, nor do they want the headaches once a flood of parents requests come in (so they can brag their kid is on the HS team). Lots of Middle schools in this country don't have organized sports, so no soccer there.

Reality is there is a group of kids with 2-2.5 months of no teams to play on. Is it a solveable problem? Yes. But until parents see real solutions they will keep coming on here to complain. I kind of get it. If the idiots in charge had hashed through some of these issues prior to announcing the change volume on TS and other sites would be down, not up.

We should all be honored to make strides to help the USMNT.

Do kids really want to play with friends? That is so asinine that I want to throw up.

Soccer should be about pushing yourself through to be the best possible soccer player you can possibly be. Developing relationships with other kids, or God forbid friendships, is distracting and therefore should be off the table."

Thank you. If we can get the kids to understand that this is not for fun we will move forward as a country in soccer.

Look we realize that we will lose some numbers in the younger programs that will trickle up to losses in the older age groups, but that is ok. This is such a great change that we are willing to lose players. Fee increases will more than compensate.

Is there any benefit to this change?
