I don't believe the former player scored last weekend...

Many coaches think that coaching is an X’s and O’s business, but in reality it is a relationship business. The secret to great coaching and a successful performance by one’s team isn’t simply technique, or tactics, or fitness.
In fact, it comes down to a simple formula:
Performance = (Potential + Behavior) – Interference
(I came up with this equation after combining the definition of performance from two highly recommended books, Timothy Gallway’s The Inner Game of Tennis and James Kerr’s Legacy, which details the 2x defending world champion New Zealand All Blacks’ incredible success in rugby.)
Most coaches only look at potential and behavior (genetics, hours and quality of practice, attitude, coaching, fitness, etc.). These are incredibly important components, but they are not the whole equation.
Far too many coaches ignore the second half of the equation, interference.
Think of interference as the static on the radio during your favorite song. You know the song is great because you have heard it before. The lyrics are the same and the rhythm has not changed, but the song is not being heard in its best form. It is not the song’s fault- it is the radio station connection. In that moment you lose faith in the station’s ability to deliver the song in it’s best form. In other words, you no longer trust the radio station.
How does this relate to coaching to parenting, and to developing high-performing athletes?
Trust is the secret ingredient of great coaching.
You have to be able to Trust in your coach as well as your fellow teammates. Competition is good and pitting teammates against one another can create a more competitive environment. If taken out of context or used inappropriately it can simply drive a wedge.

Oregon
6-13, 3-8 Pac-12
Oregon State
6-10-3, 2-9 Pac-12
Portland
7-11, WCC
Oregon beats OSU 2-1. Rhodes should be getting his pink slip Monday. Kat will be gone if she has a losing season next year

The Pac 12 is easily the second most difficult conference in D1 (the ACC is pretty difficult this year, although I don't think as deep as the Pac 12). So not to say that you are wrong, just that is something those in charge at UO and OSU will probably consider. Although, when you play in such a conference, you do have to step up your game and show a good year, at least, every three years. Two years ago, UW was something like 5-11, yet last year was in the tournament and this year has been ranked at times in the top 20. It's been three or four years since OSU had a decent year and UO hasn't had one in forever. And sadly, both programs are showing no signs of becoming competitive in the Pac 12 (although OSU improved a significant amount from last season).

Why haven't the Ducks improved?
Yes, PAC12 is a tough conference. That is precisely why the UofO must hire a coach who is up to the challenge. Superior coaching staff is a necessity in the PAC...no time to sit around for years hoping things will finally get better one year down the road.

You won't loose sleep worrying. Kat is in for another year at least so they will be at at the bottom again Good thing she has strong shoulders to hold the other teams up. Who said being a called 10 is a good thing?

Duck Fan
UO Soccer
Anyone who has contributed to this thread who has even suggested Kat Mertz is a decent coach or that the problem is the players, is completely out of touch with the situation. This lady is a real piece of work and has no business being a head coach anywhere, let alone the PAC 12. I've never seen someone get so much mileage out of being a previous assistant coach at another school or for being a mediocre at best head coach. I mean who cares that you somehow know the U.S. Women's Team head coach. Just spend a few minutes really researching her coaching career and it becomes evident very quickly she Isn't qualified to be the head coach at Oregon. Then, she hired an offensive assistant coach who has zero coaching experience.....zero!!! Just check on the Ducks offense the past three years and you'll see how ineffective their offense has been. I heard her in an interview during a recent match tell the commentators the team needed to come out in the second half and play "Duck" soccer. When the commentator asked her what that meant she laughed uncomfortably and had no reply. Find the footage and watch it for yourself. Any sort of good soccer that has been played by the Ducks this year is only due to individual efforts and has nothing to do with the coaching staff. Anyone who has watched them play will attest to that. For the player's sake, hopefully Mertz and the Asst. Athletic Director who hired her, Lisa Peterson, will both be fired for wasting these player's precious years of eligibility. As a Duck fan we expect more.
